Baylor was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in Los Angeles, where she first performed as a secular nightclub act. She opened for Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and B.B. King while still in her teens, and performed in the musical Hair. In the 1970s she continued working in musicals and also sang with Captain & Tenille and Chaka Khan, but struggled with drug abuse in the 1980s as her career soured.
Baylor became sober late in the decade, strengthening her Christian faith and deciding to launch a career in gospel music. She released her first gospel effort on Word Records in 1990. Her first five albums all hit the Top Ten of the U.S. Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, with the most successful being 1994's The Live Experience, which reached #1 on that chart

I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Jesus came into my life one day
I always knew in my heart that he was the way
Mohammed didnt have it, Buddha couldnt do it
That joy in my heart, I want the whole world to know that
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Wasting time, looking for an easy thrill
Looking for peace in every kind of frill
Marijuana didnt have it, cocaine cant do it
No
That peace of mind I want the whole world to know
That he saved me, delivered me
Dont you know that Jesus has set me free
He will never leave you nor forsake you
He'll be right there whatever you going through
Cos he's
Alpha, Omega, my master and my saviour
Try Jesus cos he can do it
Oh yes he can
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Feeling sorry for yourself and dwelling on your past
Look in the mirror wondering will your beauty last
You're running out of time to try and find real happiness
If you really wanna live, in him you must confess
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Yes I'm
So you think that thinking back all alone
Satan's telling you to give up like all hope is gone
The devil is a liar, this is what I've to say
Give your heart to Jesus Jesus is the only way
He saved me, delivered me
And dont you know that Jesus has set me free
Never leave you nor forsake you
He'll be right there whatever you going through
'Cos he is Alpha, Omega, my master and my saviour
Try Jesus, He can do it!
Yes he can! My Lord!
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Oh! yes I am
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm gon lift him up, gon lift him up
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
I'm lifting up the name of Jesus
Repeat till fade
Helen Baylor's gospel song "Lifting Up the Name of Jesus" is a declaration of her love for Jesus and an invitation for others to do the same. Baylor sings about how she had always known that Jesus was the way to salvation, and how he had saved and delivered her from a life of seeking happiness in drugs and self-pity. She encourages listeners to turn to Jesus to find true peace and joy instead of looking for it in worldly things. Baylor reminds us that Jesus will never leave nor forsake us, and he is our savior, master, and friend. The song is a powerful testimony of Baylor's faith and a prayer for others to find Jesus.
Through this song, Baylor expresses her gratitude to the Lord and invites others to join her in lifting up Jesus' name. She affirms that Jesus is the only way to true happiness and that he can save you regardless of your past. She speaks about how she was once lost in drugs and self-pity but found salvation in Jesus, and now she wants the whole world to know the joy and peace that comes with lifting up the name of Jesus.
