Baylor was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in Los Angeles, where she first performed as a secular nightclub act. She opened for Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and B.B. King while still in her teens, and performed in the musical Hair. In the 1970s she continued working in musicals and also sang with Captain & Tenille and Chaka Khan, but struggled with drug abuse in the 1980s as her career soured.
Baylor became sober late in the decade, strengthening her Christian faith and deciding to launch a career in gospel music. She released her first gospel effort on Word Records in 1990. Her first five albums all hit the Top Ten of the U.S. Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, with the most successful being 1994's The Live Experience, which reached #1 on that chart

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want
He makes me to lie down in green pastures
He leads me beside the calm, still waters
Whatever I need, He's right there
And I know I can cast all of my burden on Him
For He cares, I know that He cares, ooh...
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want, yeah
The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want, no
The Lord is my Shepherd, yeah, I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want
Yea, though I walk through the valley
Of the shadow of death
I will fear no, fear no evil
'Cause my God is with me, yes
Whatever I need, ooh, He's right on time
My every need He supplies
He gives me peace of mind
Jesus is, whoo!
The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd
He's my Shepherd, I shall not want for nothin'
The Lord is my Shepherd
And I shall not want, no, no, no
The Lord is my Shepherd
He's my Shepherd, I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd
He prepares a table before me
In the presence of my enemies
He anoints my head with oil
My cup runs over
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever
The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want
The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want, whoo!
Said, the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
I said, the Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not want, hey
The Lord is my Shepherd
I don't worry 'bout nothin'
The Lord is my Shepherd
I don't worry 'bout nothin'
The Lord is my Shepherd
I don't worry 'bout nothin'
The Lord is my Shepherd
The Lord is my Shepherd
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want
In "The Lord is My Shepherd," Helen Baylor expresses her deep connection to God as her protector and provider. She starts off by declaring that she lacks nothing because God is her shepherd. She feels secure and trustful under his guidance. She admits that sometimes she goes through difficult times or "the valley of the shadow of death," but she is not afraid because God is with her. God takes care of her in all aspects of her life. He leads her to green pastures and still waters, which signifies the peace and satisfaction she receives from being in His presence. In addition, he restores her soul, giving her a sense of renewal of spirit. She can cast her every burden on Him and find solace.
Furthermore, she acknowledges that God has anointed her to be triumphant over her enemies. Even though they are around her, she is not afraid because she feels protected by God. God has provided her with everything she needs, and she is confident that God's mercy and goodness will continue to follow her all the days of her life. She ends by affirming that she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever because she trusts in His love and guidance.
