Falling In Love With Love
Helen Merrill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool
Caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school

I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see
I fell in love with love, with love everlasting
But love fell out with me

Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool
Just caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school

Well, I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see

I fell in love with love, with love everlasting
But love fell out with me

Overall Meaning

The song "Falling in Love With Love" by Helen Merrill is a poignant portrayal of the dangers of romanticizing love. The opening verse suggests that falling in love with love is akin to falling for an illusion, or "make-believe." The singer then warns that caring too much can be a juvenile fancy, implying that the reckless pursuit of love can lead to heartbreak and disappointment. The lines "Learning to trust is just for children in school" also suggest that those who fall in love with love are still in the realm of childishness, trying to experience the feeling without the maturity to handle it.

In the second verse, the lyrics are much more personal. The singer reveals that she too fell in love with love when the moon was full, and her infatuation blinded her to the reality. The use of the metaphor "eyes unable to see" further emphasizes this idea. However, despite her love being "everlasting," it eventually failed, leaving her alone and disillusioned.

The repetition of the refrain, "Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe / Falling in love with love is playing the fool," reinforces the central theme of the song. The lyrics suggest that those who fall in love with the idea of love rather than a person or a commitment are doomed to failure, heartbreak, and disappointment.

I weave with brightly colored strings
To keep my mind off other things;
So, ladies, let your fingers dance
And keep your hands out of romance

Lovely witches
Let the stitches
Keep your fingers under control

Cut the thread but leave
Your whole heart whole
Marry maids can sew and sleep;
Wives can only sew and weep!

Falling in love with love is falling for make believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool;
Caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school

Quincy sure stepped up his game with the arrangement on this compared to his recording a year earlier on 'Quincy's Home Again', not that the earlier version was lacking.

When I was young in the late1950s we listened to this album over and over again and the songs became part of everyone's repertoire, especially the solos by Brown and Pettiford. This and You'd be So Nice set the standard for the kind of swing we were looking for. Thanks for posting!!

Helen Merrill doesn't necessarily have the prettiest voice, but she has the quality that you can listen over and over and not get tired of her.
This rendition is so good it should be illegal. Rodgers and Hart, Merrill, and one of the greatest trumpet players in jazz history trying not to attract attention to himself.

So many pretty voices. But hers seems to be unforgettable. Not sure if not technically beautiful, but surely incomparable.

I love your statement "one of the greatest trumpet players in jazz history trying not to attract attention to himself." This is exactly what a lot of good jazz virtuosos forget : the real thing is making real music, not a brilliant performance.

@Jean-José Mesguen Brownie died way too young.
