No Rest For The Wicked
Helix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Workin' hard all day long, just singin' my crazy song
I get no rest. i get no rest

On the road for forty days, lordy lord my minds in a haze
I get no rest. i get no rest

But i'm sure havin' lots of fun
Devils work is never done

Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for a rock n' roll band
No

When my time has come, don't shed no tears
In this life i've lived a million years
I get no rest. i get no rest

When i'm down below, gonna spend my time
In a helluva band, workin' overtime
I get no rest. i get no rest

Pick up my guitar and start to play
This is all that i've got to say

Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for a rock n' roll band

Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for a rock n' roll band

Ohhh, right!
Workin' hard all day long, just singin' my crazy, crazy song
I get no rest

On the road for forty days, lordy lord my minds in a haze
I get no rest. i get no rest

But i'm sure havin' lots of fun
Devil's work is never done

Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for a rock n' roll band

Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for the wicked
Ain't no rest for a rock n' roll band
No!

Ain't no rest
I get no rest

Overall Meaning

The song No Rest for the Wicked by Helix describes the life of a rock and roll band living on the road and working hard. The lead singer sings about the craziness and hectic nature of life on the road, with no time for rest or breaks. Despite the exhaustion and fatigue, the band continues to work hard, motivated by the fun and passion they have for their craft. The lyrics suggest that a life in music is not easy, but it is worth it for those who truly love it.

The chorus emphasizes the idea that there is no rest for the wicked, an age-old phrase that suggests those who are not good or pure will not find peace. In the context of the song, it suggests that the rock and roll lifestyle is not for the faint of heart, and only those who are willing to work hard and sacrifice will find success. The final verse presents a somewhat optimistic outlook, suggesting that even in death, the lead singer will continue to work hard and play music in the afterlife.

We used to travel from Windsor to Chatham to see them at the Aberdeen Tavern. Always blown away by these guys.

Helix was my very first ever metal concert, Sep. 1987. I met Brian, Brent, Daryl, Greg and Paul that night, and all 5 of them autographed my No Rest for the Wicked, Walking the Razor's Edge, Long Way to Heaven and Wild in the Streets LP's. I was helping roadies load up the stage gear after the show. They kicked ass that night!

@Jpriest13

Such a great band that didn't get the real break they deserved. Lucky enough to catch them three times live, and they were fantastic every time.

Helix was the first metal concert I ever saw, in September 1987 at a small club in Raleigh NC near NC State University. They were on tour with their Wild in the Streets album. I met Daryl, Greg, Brent, Brian and Paul, all 5 of them autographed my No Rest For the Wicked, Walking the Razor's Edge, Long Way to Heaven and Wild in the Streets LP's. Fantastic rockin' show that night, I was helping the roadies load up equipment after the show. Definitely a night to remember.
