The discography of Helmet boasts eight studio albums and two compilation albums. Following their initial release, "Strap It On" (1990), through Amphetamine Reptile, Helmet inked a deal with Interscope Records, leading to three albums under the label, notably the highly successful "Meantime" (1992). While their subsequent works, "Betty" (1994) and "Aftertaste" (1997), achieved considerable success, they fell short of matching the critical and popular acclaim garnered by "Meantime." After disbanding in 1998, Helmet regrouped in 2004 and has since presented four additional albums: "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead to the World" (2016). Currently, the band is actively engaged in the creation of their ninth studio album.

Helmet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll give in to what you know
I don't see the habits that
Become me
I've saved up my useless thoughts
Well means, it works I'm on your side
I said that? well so, I lied
This failed me once too much
Unrecognized
Well preserved
Don't forget what you heard
Helmet's Milquetoast is a complex song with lyrics that can be interpreted in many ways. Some have suggested that it is about the fear of being too different, while others think it is more about the pressure to conform to society's expectations. The opening line, "Tell me if you think it's all right," could imply that the singer is seeking permission or approval from someone else. The following line, "I'll give in to what you know," suggests that the singer is willing to compromise their own values or beliefs in order to make someone else happy.
The next few lines describe a sense of disconnect between the singer and their own behavior. "I don't see the habits that become me" implies that the singer feels alienated from their own actions, as though they are doing things without really understanding why. "I've saved up my useless thoughts" is a poignant line that suggests the singer feels that their own opinions and ideas are not valued or respected by those around them.
The second verse begins with a possible admission of guilt or deception: "Well means, it works I'm on your side. I said that? Well so, I lied." This could be interpreted as the singer admitting to saying something they didn't believe in order to avoid conflict or appease someone else. The last two lines, "This failed me once too much. Unrecognized. Well preserved. Don't forget what you heard," are more difficult to interpret, but they could suggest that the singer feels misunderstood or overlooked.
Overall, Milquetoast is a song that explores themes of conformity, submission, and the struggle to maintain one's own identity in the face of societal pressures.
