Auld Lang Syne
Helmut Lotti Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
refrain:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stoup!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
refrain
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
sin' auld lang syne.
refrain
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
sin' auld lang syne.
refrain
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gives a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid-willie-waught,
for auld lang syne.
refrain
The song starts by questioning whether old acquaintances should be forgotten and left in the past, as it invokes nostalgia and encourages remembrance of the past memories. The phrase "auld lang syne" literally translates to "old long since" and means "long ago," serving as a reminder to cherish the moments and people that have been a part of our lives in the past.
The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song as it bids farewell to the past and embraces the present by raising a toast to friendship and a shared history. The refrain emphasizes the importance of taking a sip of kindness together, and the final verse reinforces the message by encouraging the listener to hold hands and share a drink as a symbol of unity and togetherness.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
for auld lang syne.
It's time to look at all we've done
and keep the good in mind
Why should we not be glad, my friends
and leave all the bad behind
'Cause life is much too short, my friends
to waste a lot of time
Let's all shake hands and greet the past
with all the good in mind.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
for auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne.
