Two For The Road
Henry Mancini & His Orchestra and Chorus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you're feeling fancy free,
Come wander through the world with me,
And any place we chance to be,
Will be a rendezvous.

Two for the road,
We'll travel through the years,
Collecting precious memories,
Selecting souvenirs
And living life the way we please.

In the summertime the sun will shine,
In winter we'll drink summer wine,
And any day that you are mine,
Will be a lovely day.

As long as love still wears a smile,

I know that we'll be two for the road,
And that's a long long while.

Overall Meaning

The song "Two For The Road" by Henry Mancini & His Orchestra and Chorus is a romantic ballad that describes a couple's wandering journey through life, collecting memories and souvenirs along the way. The lyrics invite the listener to join in the adventure, suggesting a carefree attitude and a willingness to explore the world without a set destination in mind. The singer promises that any place they find themselves in will be a rendezvous, highlighting the romantic and spontaneous nature of their travels.

The chorus then brings in the title phrase, describing the couple's journey as being "two for the road." The repetition of this line throughout the song emphasizes the idea that the couple is in it together, traversing through the years hand in hand. The lyrics also touch on the changing seasons, noting that they will adapt and enjoy each one in their own way, such as by drinking summer wine in the winter. The final verse suggests that as long as love remains, they will continue their journey together for a "long long while."

So true, to this day one of my favorites. I mention the great musicals to my 18 yr old grandson, who plays first chair viola in Chamber, but not familiar with any of the greats. Mancini was one of the greats and continues to enrich my soul with his music! Thank you!

@@auntdeb3837 hello Debbie - good that you are giving some information to your grandson as many musicians nowadays are not so familiar with the good old music that lyrics and melody is so meaningful - that is a good way of giving music education and do continue - best regards and God Bless

Mancini once said in an interview on British tv that this was his favorite of all the songs he composed.
