Cadillac
Hep Stars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby drove up in a brand new Cadillac
My baby drove up in a brand new Cadillac
but she ain't never, ever coming back

Baby, baby, baby please
Can't you see I'm on my bended knees
Your heart's so cold it's gonna freeze
My baby drove up in a brand new, brand new Cadillac
My baby drove up in a brand new Cadillac
but she ain't never, ever coming back

Yea, Cadillac
Woah Cadillac
Yea Cadillac
Ooh Cadillac

Yea Cadilac
Ooh CADILLAC

Overall Meaning

The song Cadillac by the Swedish rock group Hep Stars tells a story about a man whose girlfriend leaves him driving a brand new Cadillac. The first verse sets the scene, where the singer sees his ex-girlfriend arriving in her new car. However, the tone quickly turns sour in the second verse when he pleads with her to come back, but she has moved on. He accuses her of having a cold heart and declares that it will freeze.

The chorus is a repetitive but effective combination of the word "Cadillac," which amplifies the sense of longing and regret that the singer feels upon seeing his ex-girlfriend in her new ride. The song's message can be interpreted in a few ways. It could be seen as a tale of unrequited love, where the singer is trying to come to terms with the loss of his girlfriend, or could be seen as a story of materialism ultimately leading to the breakup of a couple. Nevertheless, the song's catchy hooks and upbeat rock melodies make it an enjoyable listen, and the lyrics are easy to memorize.

That keyboard player is 15/16 year old Benny Andersson (ABBA). He joined the Hep Stars at age 15. That is when the Hep Stars took off. Benny then started writing original material for the Hep Stars.

Benny's first instrument was the accordion at age 6. He started playing piano at age 10. Benny is self taught.

The first song he wrote for the Hep Stars was 'No Response'. A minor hit. The second song he wrote for HS was 'Sunny Girl. A major hit. Number 1.

Benny met Bjorn (ABBA) in 1966. They were both the musical motors of their respective bands.

In 1969 Benny met Anni-Frid Lyngstad (ABBA). She was a Swedish national award winning vocalist.

Also in 1969, Bjorn met Agnetha Falkskog (ABBA) she was a composer and Swedish pop star.

Bjorn & Benny made an album together in 1970 & had their girlfriends sing backup on a song, 'Hey Old Man'. Bjorn & Benny knew that the girls were way better singers and sounded beautiful together. ABBA was born, without anyone knowing it yet.

The first song together as an official group (Pre ABBA name)
was 'People Need Love' .

Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaes have been writing together since 1966. 1966 - present.

I am American, but I knew about the Hep Stars and the Hootenanny Singers from Abba. When I was in Stockholm, I bought a Hep Stars cassette, "Juke Box Memories". Benny Anderson was genius, still is.

If you were around 10 in the early 60's and grew up on the outskirts of civilisation, in Norway - and had a 4 year old brother that just had spent his first earnings on a cheap portable "Bambino" record player -
believe me, this was hot stuff. Getting hold of a HEP STARS single in those days was an exiting thing. Your hands were trembling the first time you put it on. They never played this type of music on Norwegian radios - you had to turn into Swedish ones.

The next thing my brother bought was a pair of copies of shoes that the Beatles wore. You wouldn't believe it !
There were scenes in the schoolyard like in the opening scene of "A Hard Days Night." My brother - the hero of the day - had to be rescued by teachers and was for his own safety kept indoors.
The day Paul McCartney got married, the girls in school were very mellow and stuck to themselves and cried silent tears in the corners.
Times were different and we threw ourselves over anything that would give us a glimps of what was to come.
That's why HEP STARS were so great !
