What Now My Love
Herb Alpert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What now my love, now that you've left me
How can I live through another day
Watching my dreams turn to ashes
And my hopes turn to bits of clay?

Once I could see, once I could feel
Now I am numb, I've become unreal
I walk the night, without a goal
Stripped of my heart and my soul

What now my love, now that it's over?
I feel the world falling all around me
Here come the stars, tumbling around me
There's the sky, where that sea should be

What now my love, now that you're gone?
I'd be a fool to go on and on
No one would care, no one would cry
If I should live if I should live or die

What now my love, now there is nothing?
Only my last, my last good-bye

Overall Meaning

The song "What Now My Love" is a powerful ballad that tells a story of heartbreak and despair. The opening line asks a question that many people who have experienced heartbreak have asked themselves: "What now my love, now that you've left me?" The singer is struggling to come to terms with the reality that his relationship is over and he's facing a future that is uncertain and bleak.

In the second verse, the singer describes the way that he is feeling in the aftermath of his breakup. He says, "Once I could see, once I could feel, now I am numb, I've become unreal." This suggests that he has lost his ability to feel joy or pleasure from anything, and he is simply going through the motions of life without any real purpose or meaning. He walks the night without a goal, his heart and soul stripped away.

In the final verse, the song reaches its emotional climax. The singer proclaims that there is nothing left for him, now that his love is gone. He feels that he is alone in the world and that his life has no purpose or value. The final line, "Only my last, my last goodbye," is a heartbreaking admission that the singer has given up hope and has resigned himself to a life without his love.

Overall, "What Now My Love" is a powerful and emotional song that speaks to the pain of heartbreak and loss. Through its lyrics, the song captures the essence of what it feels like to endure the agony of a breakup and struggle to find meaning in life afterward.

Just thought of this cut out of the blue . It’s sounds so 60s . His phrasing is so subtle and understated . His attack , where he sounds like he β€œ sneaks up on the note β€œ is an unmistakable signature sound. His rendition of this song is the best rendition of anybody., I think. This was a time when jazz came the closest to top 40 radio. Brubeck had Take 5 , SergioMendez , Baja marimba band and Stan Getz . .This cut just makes you happy when you hear it 😊

Thanks for listening Sonny and I wish you an awesome day from Lloyd.

Few people have made as much of an impact on the world of music as Herb Alpert.Β  From his talent and hit songs, to selling over 72 million records worldwide, to nine Grammy Awards, fourteen platinum albums, fifteen gold albums, to A&MΒ  Records, the man is a genius.Β  Love the Herb Alpert Foundation, too.Β  His wife Lani Hall was lead vocalist with Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 and they really make a difference in the world!

Thanks Joy for checking out Herb Alpert album and I also have Sergio Mendes Brasil 66. I enjoy these masterpieces they created during the 60's and I wish radio and media today would promote more new music that is along this style rather than the noise and extreme pounding bass heard from passing car radio's now of days.
