Motor Mouth
Herbie Hancock Lyrics

Check out the one
Whose tongue is on the run
Bet they've been jawin' since the day begun
Havin' a ball
That fly up on the wall
Learns every secret and destroys 'em all

You hear that voice 'round the bend
Out there rappin' again
No there ain't no doubt
That's a motor mouth
(Never seems to run out of breath)
That's a motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

Head full o' news
Can't wait to let it loose
Just starts to pour that gossip over you
Words never stop
When that's all that you got
Who cares if it's a lie or it's the truth?

You hear that voice 'round the bend
Out there rappin' again
No there ain't no doubt
That's a motor mouth
(Never seems to run out of breath)
That's a motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

Tells every story like there's clearly no tomorrow
Knows all the scandals that you want to deny
Puts out the rumors and lays back while all the sparks start to fly
That's a motor mouth

You hear that voice 'round the bend
Out there rappin' again
No there ain't no doubt
That's a motor mouth
(Never seems to run out of breath)
That's a motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

Tells every story like there's clearly no tomorrow
Knows all the scandals that you want to deny
Puts out the rumors and lays back while all the sparks start to fly

Always around
There's one in every crowd
Just look behind you; they'll be gettin' down
Hard on the case
They'll put you in a daze
Then spread your laundry out all over town

You hear that voice 'round the bend
It's that rappin' again
No there ain't no doubt
That's a motor mouth
(Never seems to run out of breath)
That's a motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

Always talkin', always squakin'
(Never seems to run out of breath)
Motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)
That's a motor mouth

Always talkin', always squakin'
(Never seems to run out of breath)
Motor mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

(Never seems to run out of breath)
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)
That's a motor mouth

How dibba, har digga, whatta ya digga, barmigga, ornamakah, harnaya
(Never seems to run out of breath)
Shut up yo mouth
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

Forever, ever, ever, ow didda, how didda, ho didda,
(Never seems to run out of breath)
Hoi didda, ho didda, ha didda, shut up your mouth!
(Come what may, they'll talk you to death)

That's a motor mouth

Overall Meaning

The song "Motor Mouth" by Herbie Hancock is a lively and upbeat composition that describes someone who is constantly gossiping or talking, always having something to say. The lyrics suggest that this individual does not care if they are spreading the truth or falsehoods but finds pleasure in hearing their own voice, and that they thrive off the attention they receive from others. The term "motor mouth" is used interchangeably with "chatterbox," "jabberer," or "blabbermouth," to describe this type of personality.

The opening lines describe the person's behavior, who just can't stop talking since the day began and cannot hold back any secret. Words come pouring out of their mouth like a stream of consciousness without any breaks or pauses. They are a hit among the listeners, who can learn the latest buzz around town by standing near them. The lyrics suggest that the "motor mouth" may indulge in spreading rumors and scandals that people might want to deny but are unable to do so.

Furthermore, the lyrics indicate that this type of person can be found in any crowd, both spontaneously and by choice, enjoying being the center of attention and basking in the spotlight. The song seems to be critical of the "motor mouth" behavior, as it ends with a chorus that asks them to "shut up your mouth."

Totally underappreciated album. I enjoyed every track on it.

UBZUKKI

Two awesome talents combine to make a special track...Mr Herbie Hancock and the inimitable Rod Temperton......Love it..

I just heard this track this evening 11 Nov 2019 after 37 years, oh what a wonderful day. I have been searching for this for so long, I didn't know the title nor the artist. I was just 11 years old when it came out and was my most loved track. Thank you for this

Bulelani Mahlangu

This song was one of my earliest exposure to jazz fusion, and I am grateful to a guy called Collin Radebe how introduced me to this song.

mcmike100

This is not exactly jazz anything. It's a nice R&B song.

ERL

Yes, this tune is a well-known Temperton composition. His sound and choice of chords is his trade-msrk. This tune resembles a bit of those from Quincy Jones'/Heatwave's own productions relying heavily on Mr. Tempertons skills. Hancock himself is a versatile star of his own.

Femi Obaleke

One of the best jazz funk ever produced.....for those who appreciate quality music....🕺🕺🕺🕺... Well done Herbie 👍

Postmodern Recycler

An overlooked album of Herbie's. Even though he did even better, this album/song are on another level compared to the mainstream R&B artists of the time (and many of them were great).

Just beautiful Jazz-Funk !!! Aplauses MR. Hancock!!!

The Constant Xplorer

Still a funky tune. Love Herbie's work.
