River
Herbie Hancock feat. Joni Mitchell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don't snow here
It stays pretty green
I'm going to make a lot of money
Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby cry

He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad
Now I've gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby say goodbye

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
Singing songs of joy and peace

I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

Overall Meaning

The song "River" by Herbie Hancock feat. Joni Mitchell is a melancholic holiday classic that is heavily layered with emotions. The lyrics describe the Christmas time preparations that are going on around the singer, while they wish they could be somewhere else, far away from it all. The repeating lines "I wish I had a river I could skate away on" express the singer's longing for escape, a desire to be free from the burdens of her life. The river symbolizes hope, redemption, and freedom, and the singer believes that if only she had a river, she could escape the sadness, loneliness, and mistakes of her past.

The song also deals with themes of regret, loss, and unfulfilled desires. The singer has lost someone dear to her, and she is filled with sadness and remorse. The line "I made my baby cry" suggests that she is responsible for the loss, and now she wishes she could go back in time and change things. The lines "I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish and I'm sad" paint a portrait of a flawed and troubled individual who is struggling to cope with life.

Overall, the song "River" is a powerful and evocative meditation on the human condition, the longing for freedom and redemption, and the price of our mistakes.

Thank you so much for posting this... I was there at this concert. There were only 150 people invited. It was right after he won the Best Album Grammy in '08. My buddy and I were sitting in the front row, right in front of Herbie and Joni Mitchell. It was a truly amazing evening - one of the most incredible musical moments of my life, and which I will always remember.

@hedonisticmind

She is a true maestro at her skill and talent and even tho this alternative was interesting to watch it doesn’t compare in any way to her original.

@neilieB

Joni's still making wishes come true. . . The river runs through her and we have the pleasure of being invited to skate along with her. . A joy to listen to. . .

@AHC63

The ease in which she shifts from how she originally conceptualized this song, to how Herbie Hancock interpreted it - just magnificent.

@iansminardi

Joni and Herbie go back a long way and it shows. Absolutely fantastic I hope the audience appreciated the moment.

@allangmiller
