In January 2011, Andy Butler came back with a brand new crew and released “Blue Songs”, Hercules and Love Affair’s sophomore effort, mainly influenced by nineties house and electro music. Aside from Kim Ann Foxman, band members now includes Mark Pistel, Aerea Negrot, Shaun Wright.
A new album released in 2014 'The Feast of the Broken Heart', Butler enlisted four new vocalists to join him and his Blue Songs collaborator Mark Pistel: John Grant, Krystie Warren, Rouge Mary, and Gustaph,
The band’s central figure, Andrew Butler, began his musical career at 15, DJing in a Denver leather bar run by a hostess called Chocolate Thunder Pussy. He then moved to Brooklyn, in order to attend Sarah Lawrence College. According to Butler: “I’ve been writing songs since childhood. I made music for dance performances in college (where he studied under Martin Goldray), like a remake of Gino Soccio’s ‘Runaway’ done in the style of Kraftwerk.”

Athene
Hercules & Love Affair Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's is a 'survisa'
These guns are fighting for
Athena, she offers frozen shine
She taught me how to make
Make my lost reflex show
I look at every face
The way ours a gentile kiss
I look for the same thing
Athena, not perfect but so strong
War is in her own heart
Singing a woman's song
Athena, with her now she can give
To the battles of the light
She's strong enough to win
How are your born with wisdom
I look at every face
The way ours a gentile kiss
I look for the same thing
How are your born with wisdom
I look at every face
The way ours a gentile kiss
I look for the same thing
How are your born with wisdom
I look at every face
The way ours a gentile kiss
I look for the same thing
The song "Athene" by Hercules And The Love Affair is an ode to the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts - Athena. The lyrics paint a portrait of the goddess as a fearless and powerful woman, who symbolizes the qualities of bravery, strength, and intelligence. The first line of the song "Athena, she's not a man or boy, she's a 'survisa'" suggests that Athena represents something beyond the usual binary concepts of gender, and that she is a force to be reckoned with.
The lines "These guns are fighting for" and "She taught me how to make my lost reflex show" showcase the theme of struggle and the fight to regain one's identity. The singer is inspired by Athena to fight for what they believe in and learn to trust their intuition. The lyrics also talk about the mystery of wisdom and how it is not limited to a select few, but can be found in every face. The singer is searching for the same kindness and gentility that Athena embodies.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "How are you born with wisdom?" emphasizing the importance of self-reflection, the search for knowledge, and the valor of the human spirit. The song ultimately celebrates the power of feminine energy and the ability of a single individual to inspire and bring change in their lives and in the world.

Ella es la mujer de la guerra
Ella nos da las razones
Razones por las que vale la pena luchar
Atenea
Ella ofrece protección
Ella me enseñó a hacer
Hacer el reflejo de mi vida
Cómo anhelo su sabiduría
Miro en cada cara
Los ojos grises, el beso suave
Busqué el lugar seguro
Atenea
No perfecto, pero tan fuerte
Combatido con su propio corazón
Cantando la canción de una mujer
Atenea
Con sus manos podía dar
A través de las batallas de su vida
Ella me enseñó cómo vivir
Cómo anhelo su sabiduría
Miro en cada cara
Los ojos grises, el beso suave
Busqué el lugar seguro

This performance got me hypnotized, I can't stop watching it. I can't get enough of it. That brass section got me crazy. I really like Kim Ann Foxman's vocals and presence; and just adore Nomi Ruiz's dancing and powerful vocals. That man vogueing adds a chic touch. But most of all, what killed me is how the "magic hour", that golden light that is produced at sunset, hit the moment they were performing this song. ❤ Bravissimo!!!

This will forever be in my top 5 favorite music videos of all time. It's not an official music video, but it's still better than what most artists put out these days. It's so raw and so real.

I agree, one of the most unique and best I've seen! Such a great performance.
