Here Be Dragons have supported many of the top names in World/folk music - The Young Dubliners (USA/Ireland), Carlos Nuñes (Spain), The Oysterband (England), Flook (Ireland) and Yo Yo Mundi (Italy). They have appeared on television in Wales, internationally on cable and enjoyed radio support across Europe as well as in Australia and the USA.
With their live show, you don’t so much introduce Here Be Dragons, as unleash them. They leap onto the stage. Mike Brooks, wild front man and lead singer also extremely accomplished on banjo, guitar, mandolin clad in a kilt bearing the Welsh national flag Will Morrison the drummer keeps the band firing on all cylinders, Stepan Pasicznyk (Formally of “The Ukrainians”) does magic on accordion, Cath Watkins sings and plays fiddle like the devil with such apparent ease, and Kyle Jones plays bass, guitar and vocals.
Here Be Dragons try to be true to their culture and heritage, not as a museum exhibit but in a way that’s a more honest reflection of what it means to be Welsh in the twenty-first century, whilst still respecting their Celtic roots. Using acoustic instruments like banjos, mandolins, fiddles and accordions alongside drums and electric bass in a way that’s far from most people’s idea of a Celtic folk-rock band; the emphasis is much more on the rock style of presentation. They sing in both Welsh and English and play mainly original songs but also include a couple of traditional ones like ‘Sosban Fach,’ and interpret them with all the power they deserve.

Aur y byd na'i berlau man
Gofyn 'rwyf am galon hapus
Calon onest calon lan
Calon lan yn llawn daioni
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos
Dim ond calon lan all ganu
Pe dymunwn olud bydol
Chwim adenydd iddo sydd
Golud calon lan rinweddol
Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd
Calon lan yn llawn daioni
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos
Dim ond calon lan all ganu
Canu'r dydd ar chanu'r nos
Hwyr a bore fy nymuniad
Esgyn ar adenydd can
Ar i Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad
Rhoddi imi calon lan
Calon lan yn llawn daioni
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos
Dim ond calon lan all ganu
Canu'r dydd ar chanu'r nos
Calon lan yn llawn daioni
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos
Dim ond calon lan all ganu
Canu'r dydd ar chanu'r nos
The lyrics to Here Be Dragons's song "Calon Lân" convey a deep sense of purity and longing for a virtuous heart. The opening lines express a rejection of a lavish and materialistic life, emphasizing that the poet does not desire the gold and pearls of the world. Instead, the poet asks for a happy and honest heart, one that is clean and pure.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Calon lan yn llawn daioni," which translates to "A pure heart full of goodness." It further highlights the superior beauty of a pure heart compared to the delicate lily. The poet asserts that only a pure heart can sing, whether it be during the day or night. This suggests that true joy and fulfillment can only be found within oneself, and it is not dependent on external circumstances or time.
In the second verse, the lyrics explore the concept of worldly wealth and its limited value. The poet states that if they were to desire earthly riches, they would prefer to possess wings to fly rather than the material possessions of wealth. Instead, the poet values the moral and spiritual wealth of a pure heart, which brings everlasting profit.
The third verse introduces a spiritual aspect and a plea to God. The poet expresses their wish to rise on the wings of angels and sing praises to God, asking for a pure heart as a gift from their Creator. This final appeal suggests that a pure heart is not something that can be achieved solely through personal efforts, but it requires divine intervention.
Overall, the lyrics of "Calon Lân" encapsulate a desire for a pure heart filled with goodness, rejecting the allure of material wealth and emphasizing the importance of inner virtue and spirituality. It serves as a reminder of the timeless value of moral integrity and the fulfillment that comes from nurturing a pure and honest heart.
