After playing piano in Cuby and the Blizzards and several other bands since 1964, Brood started his own group, Herman Brood & His Wild Romance, in 1977. The band had their first hit single, Saturday Night, in 1978. But even more than his music, it was his outspoken statements in the press about sex and drug use that brought Herman Brood into the public arena in the Netherlands. In the early 1980s he was romantically involved with the German artist Nina Hagen, with whom he appeared in the film Cha Cha. Brood relished the media attention and became the most famous hard drug user in the Netherlands. "It is usual that an artist uses drugs, but tells everybody he doesn't", he once said in an interview. "I admit that it scared me that my popularity could make people start using drugs." In the 1990s he took up painting and became as successful as a painter as he was as a musician.
With the band 'Herman Brood & his Wild Romance' he made his best known album 'Shpritsz' (a play on the German word for injection needle), containing anti-drug use songs like 'Dope Sucks', but also 'Saturday Night'. Brood swore off most drugs, reducing his drug use to alcohol and a daily shot of speed.
As a result of an impressive TV-show together with the 'modern saint' Salvation Army's major Alida Bosshardt makes Herman Brood also beloved to people who never appreciated or even heard his music.
When in 2001, he found out that he had only a few months left to live, Herman took matters into his own hands and, depressed by the failure of his drug rehabilitation program, committed suicide on July 11 by jumping from the roof of the Hilton Hotel at the age of 54.

Don't wanna push no narcotic revolution
Don't wanna push you down Dead End Street
Don't like to see you run around in circles
Don't wanna turn you into a piece of concrete
Get down to the real thing
You better do it from the heart
Don't you do it from the head
You better do it from the heart
Hate to see you fade away
In some heartbreak-hotel room
Hate to see you run & hide
Like a disease in the gloom
Get down y'r instinct
Get down to what you honestly feel
You better do it from the heart
Don't you do it from the head
You better do it from the heart
I don't need y'r friendly talk
& y'r words as sweet as honey
I don't want y'r so called smile
While y'r mind is on my money
Hate to see you starin' at the points of y'r shoes
Just wanna crack you up, just wanna turn you loose
Hey child get down & nasty
Get down to what you honestly feel
Don't wanna push no narcotic revolution
Don't wanna push you down Dead End Street
Don't like to see you run around in circles
Don't wanna turn you into a piece of concrete
Get down y'r instinct
Get down to what you honestly feel
You better do it from the heart
Don't you do it from the head
You better do it from the heart
Dope sucks
It's comin' out of my nose
The lyrics of Herman Brood & His Wild Romance's song Dope Sucks are a disapproving commentary on drug addiction and the culture surrounding it. The song speaks to the dangers of indulging in narcotics as a means of escape or rebellion, criticizing drug pushers and warning against blindly following along with the drug culture. The song encourages listeners to instead rely on their instincts and genuine feelings instead of getting caught up in the mind-altering effects of drugs.
The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the song, as Herman Brood proclaims that he does not want to push a "narcotic revolution" or lead listeners down a "Dead End Street." He then delves into the negative consequences of drug use, describing how he "hate[s] to see [someone] fade away in some heartbreak-hotel room" or "run & hide like a disease in the gloom." He urges listeners to get "down to the real thing" and "what you honestly feel" from the heart, rather than relying on the false promises of drugs.
Throughout the song, Herman Brood emphasizes the importance of individuality, discouraging listeners from following the homogenous drug culture blindly. He rejects "friendly talk" and shallow smiles, calling for listeners to "get down & nasty" and embrace their authentic selves. The repetition of the phrase "dope sucks" reinforces the central message of the song, condemning the use of drugs as a means of escape and urging listeners to find true fulfillment through their own instincts and passions.
Overall, Dope Sucks is a powerful commentary on the dangers of drug culture and a call to action for listeners to embrace their authentic selves and find genuine fulfillment in life.
