La Ultima Copa
Herman Olivera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

amigos, diganle

(etc.)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "Eche, amigo, no mas, echeme y llene hasta el borde la copa de champan / que esta noche de farra y de alegria / el dolor que hay en mi alma quiero ahogar" talk about drowning pain in merrymaking and alcohol. The singer is asking the waiter to fill his glass to the brim with champagne to forget the pain in his heart. It is implied that he is heartbroken because the person he loved and still loves did not reciprocate his feelings. He goes on to say that it is the last celebration of his life, the last time he would be happy, implying that he is planning to end his life.

He then states that he loves this woman deeply, and he can never forget her. The singer is not worried about getting drunk and potentially losing control because drinking is the only way to numb the pain of heartbreak. He then asks the waiter to refill his glass with champagne, indicating that alcohol is his only solace. He tells his friends that if they see his love, they should tell her that his life ended because of her love. Lastly, he raises his glass for the final toast as this could be the last time he celebrates, and the person he loves might be doing the same, kissing another man.
