Also Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) is a medium-sized North American thrush. It is not very closely related to the other North American migrant species of Catharus, but rather to the Mexican Russet Nightingale-thrush.
Description
This species is 15–17 cm in length, and has the white-dark-white underwing pattern characteristic of Catharus thrushes. Adults are mainly brown on the upperparts, with reddish tails. The underparts are white with dark spots on the breast and grey or brownish flanks. They have pink legs and a white eye ring. Birds in the east are more olive-brown on the upperparts; western birds are more grey-brown.
Behavior
Their breeding habitat is coniferous or mixed woods across Canada, Alaska and the northeastern and western United States. They make a cup nest on the ground or relatively low in a tree.
Hermit Thrushes migrate to wintering grounds in the southern United States and south to Central America. Although they usually only breed in forests, Hermit Thrushes will sometimes winter in parks and wooded suburban neighborhoods. They are very rare vagrants to western Europe.
They forage on the forest floor, also in trees or shrubs, mainly eating insects and berries.

Hermit Thrush's song is ethereal and flute-like, constructed from a descending musical phrase repeated at different pitches. They often sing from a high open location.

I am such a perfectionist and strive to have it look like it was a picture...does it? No...but that is what I want...I throw out more paintings that I keep and make myself crazy in the process...love your style of teaching...you make it look so easy!!

Oh Susan, now you're the one I must thank! I saw your comment last night and you've really inspired me to start recording my lessons that I was teaching in my classes over the summer. Hi hon, I don't aim for any particular size, it's just how my brain interprets the information and how it happens to direct my hand. But I will say, the more sketching I do, the better I'm getting at proportions. It's ALL BRAIN WORK!!! LOL! Love, E

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS sketch in pen, Susan. The reasons are many, but 2 of the main ones are; i) you don't waste time erasing your work, ii) you always have a record of what you've done so you can see where to make changes next time. NO PENCILS ALLOWED in any of my lessons, hon!! I'm watching you!! LOL. Love, Elaine

Hi hon!! Yes, it would seem so. His head had a very slight twist, very hard for you to see in the reference photo online, but I was trying my best when following it on my desk. Always things to improve LOL!!! Love, Elaine
