not to mention that heroes could participate in actual combat. you could even have multiple of them in the same army. a high lvl hero is a force to be reckoned with.

I agree. Although HOMAM3 was my 'first' homam, I can say that HOMAM4 leads a tiny bit before HOMAM3 in my chart. I think 4 has the most suitable graphic for this kind of game. Sometimes I wish to take good things from 3 and 4 and combine them together.

Šimon K. in fan mod Equilibris they are nerfed. attack/defence 30>27, also they became slower. Now crusaders are good counters against them, with their bigger town grow and with their new permament passive Death Ward.

ahh the death town...all about the 3rd level. either pick vamps, one of the best units in the game, and gimp yourself of having any ranged. OR pick the slimies, who destroyed things, but pass up on the amazingness of the vampires...choices choices

@Northorseman well Im really looking forward to Horn Of The Abyss. which have been a project now for over two years.. and they are expecting to be finished this year. But Wake Of Gods was an amazing expansion, which changed the fun of the game a lot, but made playing against some other players quite harder as well.

There's also a choice of buildings. You can go into pure undead or pure demon. So if you don't like em mixed you don't have to build em. The argument that demons don't have order is false. How else do the Devils govern hell? :/ Anyway, loved both Heroes 3 and Heroes 4. Played a bit more of Heroes 3 cause I enjoyed the style a bit more (More similar to my favorite Heroes 2.). But the strategic gameplay side is much better in Heroes 4, more to think about.

I felt the same way after playing through some campaigns in HOMM IV. I was thinking why would people hate this game and I came to the conclusion that it's because in HOMM IV you have to actually think a little of what you are doing when in HOMM III you usually survive on creature strength alone.

The problem people have with HOMM4 is that it's the sequel to one of the best games EVER created (and for me who's been a gamer since NES times and played over 800 games it IS the best one). HOMM3 is just perfect and a lot of players just wanted more of the same. I personally enjoy innovation in games so I appreciated HOMM4 and judged it by it's own standards not as a sequel to HOMM3. And by the way you just have to try HOMM3 - it will blow you away

for some reason I never really liked IV, and V just made me sad to see how much it have all changed as Im a player from back to the first version HOMM I. and I am now stuck at playing HOMM III. which was the best version if you ask me. and with all the developers around HOMM III. there are now some unofficial versions which made the game even better.

@h0vding Problem with HOMM III is that it's extremely unstable and I'm running it on XP Home edition. I wonder if I need some kind of patch to make it more stable.

I really enjoyed 4, but I still felt like 2, 3, and 5's necromancers were more intimidating. They didn't need to mix with demonic troops, for one thing, and their undead warriors just had a more menacing look to them. I missed my dread knights, wraiths, and liches, dammit. D= Still. This theme was smashing, even if 3 and 5 were a titch more 'fitting'.

This is the first HOMM game I ever played, and at the time of writing, the only one. I was probably about 9 or 10 I reckon, and back then my dad still had the time to indulge in some Might and Magic, and the icon was on the desktop of the family computer, double-clicked it and never left the computer for WEEKS! I'm told it was terrible compared to other HOMM's, but I suppose the lack of knowledge of 'better' games made it better for me. Is this one really as bad as people say? Or just fanboys?

@DonF72 problem is not the game but the system, XP Home edition is only good for working on MS-Office and a few other programs, it can't work good with graphics and internet

Can it be? It doesn't feel like the other HoMM games, which is EXACTLY right! But if it was released separately, not compared to HoMMIII, I'm sure this game would have gotten excellent marks.

just cant compare heroes 3 with 4. theyre both great. 3 you can build alot more creatures and i liked the towns more, but 4 you can pimp your hero wayyyy better, spells are far more usefull and powerful and overall I thought the campaign were alot better in 4 alswell. with 4 i really wanted to know what happened next, in 3 it was just ... meh lets beat these guys and hope the story gets better

I actually think it's better that they took it from oriental and trditional places. I assume 3DO wants to give the gamer the ultimate experience and enjoy the game as much as possible. So you get the feeling as being there. I personally don't think it would even have got half as good if they produced their music themselves. The game becomes a whole with this incredible music :)

Not a particularly good Necropolis song. However, that being said, I think it fits perfectly for the character of Gauldoth Half-dead. It has its evil brass motifs, but also hints of heroic motifs; sort of encapsulating the character's duality.

3 was better than 1,2,4 and 5. Because the towns where balanced and the gameplay were good and it wouldn't stop being fun and you couldn't predict it as much as you could predict the others. Still I have made up a foolproof plan to beat every map with any castle. And the easiest to grasp was actually the weakest town of all but it's even the town that is most unbalanced. Necropolis infact.

you are right.i apologize for creating any disturbances,but hear me out.if this is a Necro town,where is the big masive graveyard,the sinister castle on a black mountain?this town is as grassy as any rampart or castle,and the buildings are far from sinister.if the title wouldn't have said Necropolis theme,i wouldn't have known what this town is this

I suspect the series peaked at HOMM3 (although I far prefer the 2D sprites and operatic solos of HOMM2). The next HOMM game needs to be a touch more inventive, but not in a way which dilutes or dumbs the current formula. I still preferred the 2D sprites.

I cant believe so many nay-sayers in here. As its been discussed countless times, H4 differs alot from the original setup of the others games, its a like-dislike situation, based on opinion. H4 has in my opinion one of the greatest game soundtrack ever created.

Host chose devils over Bone dragons. What do you guys say is better? No shit ghost>Cerberus or vampire>svamp monster but devil and Bone dragons appears close.

PS Death was by far the best race to creep with. Poison+slow+aging and preferably plague at higher levels meant all melee creeps were to slow to catch you and took damage over time until dead. Have had level 2 heros raise over 10 levels in a single fight using that on hardest mode.

Doesn't suck. If it came out on it's own- i.e. it was called Heroes of Might and Magic, and didn't have the awesomeness of II and III behind it, it would be an amazing game. Otherwise, it is compared unfavorably to the previous games.

I agree, in every game that has them - as a necro, i hunt down demons with a passion. Inferno is chaos, whereas there is some sort of order to death. Those two just can't combine in my head. They should have combined Inferno with Dungeon instead, Stronghold with Fortress. Not sure though which one would be good match for Necropolis.
