BEAT: How would you describe your sound?
HIATUS: Shura calls her stuff ‘night folk’, which I like – it hints at her traditional songwriter roots while evoking the more psychedelic elements of her sound. Personally I don’t put much stock in genre names – look at how desperately producers are fleeing the term ‘dubstep’, or how silly the tag ‘future garage’ is going to sound ten years from now – but there’s definitely a melancholic, cinematic side to our stuff that it would be nice to convey in words.

Steal your soul
Steal your soul
Steal your soul
Steal your soul
You took me down
To the river
Steal your soul
Steal your soul
You took me down
To the river
Steal your soul
You took me down
Steal your soul
Steal your soul
You took me down
Steal your soul
Steal your soul
You took me down (down, down)
You took me down (down, down)
You took me down (down, down)
And drowned me
The lyrics to Hiatus & Shura's song "River" seem to suggest a personal journey to a point of no return. The repeated phrase, "Steal your soul," could allude to the feeling of being robbed of one's identity, or perhaps being consumed by something that takes over completely. The idea of being taken down to a river is fitting, as water often signifies transformation or renewal. In many cultures, the river symbolizes a boundary between the old and the new, or between life and death. The singer appears to have been taken down to the river against their will, and their soul has been stolen or destroyed as a result.
It's possible that the song is a metaphor for addiction or some kind of destructive habit. The line "You took me down and drowned me" could suggest that the singer has been consumed by something that has ultimately led to their downfall. The repetition of "Steal your soul" could represent a cycle of temptation and indulgence that leads to emptiness and despair. Alternatively, the lyrics may be interpreted more literally as the aftermath of a violent act, with the attacker taking the victim to the river to dispose of the body. Overall, the song conveys a sense of powerlessness and despair, with the singer resigned to their fate at the hands of a mysterious force.
