Their sound is a fusion of future beats, hip-hop and soul with subtler influences of Latin, dubstep and opera.
Since forming in mid 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote have already shared the bill with such acts as Stones Throw Record’s Taylor McFerrin, Warp legends Chris Clark and Harmonic 313 and sound genius Robin Fox, Brainfeeder’s Lapalux and oOoOO as well as playing bills at Woodford Folk Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and headlined at stage at the final The Bohemian Masquerade Ball.
Hiatus Kaiyote's chief songwriter is Nai Palm, who pens intricate compositions, rich with colour and mystery. With her unique honey-velvet voice, she is supported by three of Melbourne's finest and most versatile musician/producers. Keyboardist Simon Mavin, who has graced the stage with such bands such as Australia’s premier soul outfit The Bamboos, rock jazz freakout crew Whitesploitation, reggae masters The Red Eyes and funk heavyweights The Firemen. Paul Bender on bass, laptop and guitar is a graduate of Miami Florida's indie, experimental and improvised music scenes, but with a passion for stank-funk basslines. Drummer Perrin Moss is a powerhouse of beats both jilted and slick and an experienced MC, producer, percussionist and turntabilist and is the former frontman of ten piece Blue Mountains hip-hop band Jumbledat, Perrin has collaborated with other crews such as Thundamentals.
In their short time as a band they have fused a unique sound held together by Nai Palm's smoke drenched vocals and innovative melodies, Simon Mavin’s hands on knowledge of synthesizers, keyboards, Latin and jazz structures, Perrin Moss's slippery drum beats and soul clap rhythms and Paul Benders waterfall thumbs of bass guitar and sample wizardry.
Their first residency, held on Tuesdays at The Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy Melbourne was extended from 4 weeks to four months due to popular demand. They sold out The Northcote Social Club for their EP launch (April 5th 2012) and received strong turnouts at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane and Goodgod Small Club in Sydney as part of their debut tour in aid of the release.

I would reach out with the
Blue rose of ours
Wrapping myself around you
High up in the treetops
We could get lost in our lust
Ooh, us
I'd only dance around you
Underneath the green water
I could fill you up
You could be my daddy-o
We could get lost in our lust
Oh, us
All, all I wanna do
An it's all
All I wanna do
All, all I wanna do
An it's all
All I wanna do
Close (close) to your molecules
Close to your molecules
If I were a hummingbird
Your wings would beat like thunder
Orbit in a flight display
As if to gently say
Kiss the flowers ultraviolet
We could get lost or we could find it alive with
Electrons in the air on fire
Lightning kissing metal
Whisper to the tiny hairs
Battery on my tongue
Meteor that greets Sahara
We could get lost in static power
Ours
All, all I wanna do
An it's all
All I wanna do
All, all I wanna do
All, all I wanna do
Close to your molecules, yeah
Close to your molecules I wanna be
Close to your molecules, yeah
Close to your molecules I wanna be
Close to your molecules, yeah
Close to your molecules I wanna be
Close to your molecules, yeah
Close to your molecules I wanna be
The lyrics of Hiatus Kaiyote's "Chivalry Is Not Dead" describe a yearning for a deep and intimate connection to someone. The song uses various animal and nature metaphors to express the intensity of this desire. The first verse compares the singer to a leopard slug, and imagines wrapping themselves around the object of their affection, getting lost in their lust high up in the treetops. In the second verse, the singer becomes a seahorse, dancing around their partner underneath the green water, filling them up, and suggesting a more dominant/submissive dynamic. The third verse sees the singer as a hummingbird, with their wings beating like thunder and urging their lover to "kiss the flowers ultraviolet," before getting lost in "static power."
Throughout the song, the lyrics express a longing for a deep and almost mystical connection. The references to molecules and electricity speak to a desire for intimacy on a molecular level, and the imagery of "kissing metal" underscores the idea of deep connection and electrifying passion. The repetition of the phrase "all I wanna do" suggests a singular focus on this desire for intimacy, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve it.
In essence, "Chivalry Is Not Dead" is a song about wanting to be as close as possible to someone, both physically and emotionally. The animal and nature metaphors are used to emphasize the intensity and primal nature of this desire, while the repeated phrase "all I wanna do" underscores the single-mindedness of the singer's focus.
