Lydia
HighlySuspect Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Black ocean, cold and dark
I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless
But the only girl that could talk to him just couldn't swim
Tell me what's worse than this
And it echoes in the halls
They danced along the walls
The memories of your ghost
You are the one that I used to love
And I'm still in love, but I've never loved you the most

I've seen better days
So unafraid in my youth
I can't breathe, much less believe

You're getting everything you had
Every little thing you had
I'm gonna run repairs
I've seen your fucking worst
And at your worst, you're still the best
But at my best, I am the worst
It's a curse
Your eyes are lined in pain
Black tears don't hide in rain
And I tied you to the tracks
When I turned around, I heard the sound
I hit the ground, I know there's no turning back

I've seen better days
So unafraid in my youth
I can't breathe, much less believe the truth
Better days, so unafraid in my youth
I can't breathe, much less believe the truth

Black ocean, cold and dark
I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless
But the only girl that could talk to him, she couldn't swim
Tell me what's worse than this
What's worse is all the coke
The ice that numbs my throat if only for the night
My muscles will contract, your bones will crack
It's just a fact cause I am here to win this fight

I can't fucking breathe, much less believe the truth
I pick up a mag, aim for this head, and shoot
Better days, so unafraid in my youth
I can't breathe or believe the truth

Your eyes are lined in pain
Black tears don't hide in rain

And I tied you to the tracks
When I turned around, I heard that sound

Overall Meaning

The song "Lydia" by HighlySuspect is a haunting depiction of an emotionally tumultuous relationship. The opening lines, "Black ocean, cold and dark, I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless," sets the tone for the singer's mindset as he compares himself to a predator, ready to consume and destroy anything in his path. The reference to "Lydia" is not explained in the lyrics, but there appears to be a significant attachment to her. However, she lacks the ability to handle his intensity, and the imagery of "the only girl that could talk to him, she couldn't swim" furthers the idea that she was not prepared to be in a relationship with someone so emotionally and mentally exhausting.

The chorus repeats the phrase "I've seen better days, so unafraid in my youth, I can't breathe, much less believe the truth," which suggests that the singer is reflecting on how he used to be, and how he can no longer connect to that version of himself. The lyrics become more confessional as the song progresses, with lines like "And I tied you to the tracks, when I turned around, I heard that sound," indicating that the singer may have caused harm to Lydia, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Overall, "Lydia" conveys a sense of desperation and vulnerability underneath a tough exterior, with the singer struggling to come to terms with their own emotions and actions.

The recent music video for Highly Suspect's latest single Lydia falls into the category of, "I can't believe this exists." It's shot in
realtime, and the entirety of its four-minute run time features an actress tied down at the bottom of a pool, trying her damnedest to break free.

The first question you're probably asking yourself is, "How on earth can anyone hold their breath that long?!" Well, the actress in this video is actually world champion freediver Marina Kazankova. Here's TS&R to explain why she was the perfect choice for this production:
Marina Kazankova, former freediving champion and world record
holder, is best known underwater for her ‘dynamic breath hold’, or the ability to athletically move and exert energy while holding her breath.
On land, Marina is also an actress and global traveler, speaking several languages (quadrilingual), and once we heard Marina could swim the length of almost four Olympic-sized swimming pools... on a single breath, we knew we had found our character.

The final video was take 6 of 8.
