Chicago
Highly Suspect Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why am I fucking up so bad?
What am I even doing?
When am I ever gonna learn?
What it is she already knows

Baby, I met you in downtown Chicago
But I, I had to drive away the very next day
So I, flew your pretty ass to New York City
Then I, I left you in L.A

Was it love?
Or my fantasy?
Was it real?
Or just a dream?

Remember one night getting too fucked up in the Hamptons at Tom's
I fell off his bike, and girl, you laughed at me so hard
Spent a whole week getting drunk on the dunes of Cape Cod, that's when you met my father

Was it love?
Or my fantasy?
Was it real?
Or just a dream?
Was it love?
Or my fantasy?

'Cause sometimes you get so angry
And I take it personal
And I should've known
That you were only hurting
'Cause life can be uncertain
When you're only 19 years old

So it's another late night out here in California
And I'm, I'm burying my pain into somebody else
And now you're back at home living with your mama
Got my first record sitting on your shelf

Was it love?
Or my fantasy?
Was it real?
Or just a dream?
Was it love?
Or my fantasy?
Was it real?

Well baby I met you in downtown Chicago
But I, had to drive away the next day

So I, flew your pretty ass to New York City
Then I, I left you in L.A

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Highly Suspect's song "Chicago" explore the complexity and uncertainty of love, told through the lens of the lead singer's experiences with a woman. The lyrics are composed of a series of self-reflective questions that the singer asks himself about his relationship with this woman. He wonders why he keeps messing things up and why he can't seem to learn from his mistakes. He also acknowledges that the woman seems to have a better understanding of their relationship than he does.

The song then takes the listener on a journey through various memories and moments from the relationship, including meeting in downtown Chicago, spending time together in the Hamptons and on Cape Cod, and eventually parting ways in Los Angeles. Throughout these memories, the singer questions whether the love was real or just a figment of his imagination.

The lyrics also touch on themes of age and maturity, as the woman is described as being only 19 years old. The singer seems to regret not being more understanding of her struggles and pain, and it is implied that their relationship suffered as a result. The song ultimately ends with the singer realizing that the woman has moved on and that he must come to terms with his own mistakes and regrets.

I just love this song. Johnny's voice with the piano is so raw. I mean all of Highly Suspect's music is absolutely fantastic, but this is all soul and emotion, and it really highlights Johnny's unique vocals. When I saw them opening for Halestorm in Buffalo, I didn't know who they were just as most. But when they started, I was completely awestruck. Definitely a fan from that moment. M.C.I.D.
