The Hightower Brothers were a family gospel band consisting of Reverend Nic… Read Full Bio ↴The Hightower Brothers were a family gospel band consisting of Reverend Nick Hightower along with his five sons: lead singer Robert (nicknamed "Little Sugar" and then just "Sugar"), Willie James (second tenor), Rico (guitarist), William Martin (bass), and Johnny Hightower on vocals. The group formed in DeLand, Florida eventually moving its home base to Newark, New Jersey.
The Brothers' recorded debut was "At the Golden Gate" in 1958 for the Gospel label, an imprint of Savoy. They also recorded for Nashboro starting in 1959 and Peacock beginning in December 1963.
The group made a play for mainstream success under the pseudonym Mr Lee And The Cherokees in 1965 for the Peacock secular arm Sure-Shot Records.
