The Man I Love
Hildegard Knef Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every night I dream a little dream
And of course Prince Charming is the theme
The he for me
Although I realize as well as you
It is seldom that a dream comes true
To me it's clear
That he'll appear
Some day he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you?
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love
The song "The Man I Love" by Hildegard Knef is a romantic ballad that expresses the yearning of a young woman for her ideal partner. The opening lines of the song portray the dreamy state of mind of the singer who imagines herself in a world where she is with her prince charming. She acknowledges that it is rare for such dreams to come true, but she cannot help but hope that someday, he will come along. The words "the man I love" are repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the intense desire of the singer to find her soulmate.
The singer's daydreams about the man she loves are so vivid that she sees him as big and strong, and she resolves to make him stay when he comes her way. There is a sense of inevitability in the lyrics, as she believes that they are meant to be together, and she trusts that they will be able to communicate without saying a word. The second half of the song presents the singer as patient, waiting for her love to arrive, even if it takes years. She imagines a future where they have a little house just for the two of them, and she never wants to leave his side. The song ends with the singer still waiting eagerly for the man she loves, as if nothing else in the world matters.

I was with my Dad in Berlin in late 60's early 70's. He was with Philips of Netherlands and was making videos for their record label using new technology, way before MTV. I remember seeing Hildegarde Knef in studio, she brought her daughter with her who was about 6 at time. She sang Happy Birthday to someone in her crew. Till this day I remember that, I can't even remember the video. She sang it so unique, never heard anything like it. I was about 12 at the time. I didn't understand a word in German but I loved to hear her just talk. She could make even German sound nice!

She sings with a deep voice but she has depth and feeling and transmits both. Nice to hear her sing.

Elle avait du chic et du chien, le sens du tempo, une voix suave, sensuelle et rocailleuse à la fois.
Cette voix et ce caractère de battante, et cette force intérieure
Quel plaisir de l'écouter encore et encore. Merci Hildegard!
