Beautiful Messes
Hillary Scott & The Scott Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you spinning in a lie that keeps on telling you
That you're not good enough
When you're looking in the mirror
Do you see someone impossible to love?

Full of fragile broken pieces
We're all rough around the edges
We ain't perfect no
We ain't even close
We got holes in our hearts
We got scars we don't show
But all that baggage we
Keep on dragging around
Anytime we start laying it down

Lay it down at the foot of the cross
Give it to the one who can carry it all
Even at our worst, to him we ain't lost causes
Just beautiful messes

We're all David's we're all Mary's
We've been liars, thieves and everything between
But don't forget God used the misfits just like us
To do the most amazing things

So bring your faults, your flaws, your secrets
And watch him use those broken pieces

'Cause we ain't perfect no
We ain't even close
We got holes in our hearts
We got scars we don't show
But all that baggage we
Keep on dragging around
Anytime we start laying it down

Lay it down at the foot of the cross
Give it to the one who can carry it all
Even at our worst, to him we ain't lost causes
Just beautiful messes

No matter where you are right now
Let thy grace come pouring down
It won't run out, it won't run out

We ain't perfect no
We ain't even close
We got holes in our hearts
We got scars we don't show
But all that baggage we
Keep on dragging around
Anytime we start laying it down

Lay it down at the foot of the cross
Give it to the one who can carry it all
Even at our worst, to him we ain't lose causes
Ooh lay it down at the foot of the cross
Give it to the one who can carry it all
Even at our worst, to him we ain't lost causes

Just beautiful messes
Beautiful messes, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Beautiful Messes" by The Scott Family is a powerful anthem about acknowledging our flaws and shortcomings as humans and turning them over to God. The lyrics describe the struggle of feeling unworthy or imperfect, but ultimately encouraging listeners to lay down their burdens at the foot of the cross and trust that God can use their broken pieces for something beautiful. The verses speak to the common experience of feeling like we don't measure up or have too much emotional baggage, but the chorus reassures us that God sees us as "just beautiful messes" and can make something extraordinary out of our imperfections.

The song draws its inspiration from the stories of Biblical figures like David and Mary who were flawed but were still used by God in powerful ways. It acknowledges that we've all made mistakes and have things we're not proud of, but that doesn't disqualify us from being used by God. The overall message of the song is one of hope and redemption - no matter how messy our lives may feel, there's always a chance to be made whole again through the love of God.

It sounds like your grandma is a believer in Jesus Christ and has put her faith in him. If you have faith in Jesus, you know that death is no more for the believer. The Bible calls it falling asleep in Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:14

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:8

One day we will be given a glorious resurrection body.
1 Corinthians 15

No more dying, crying, sickness, or sorrow for all eternity we will be together forever with Jesus.
Revelation 21:4

That is a great hope.
Hebrews 6:19

I know it is a sad time, but it is not goodbye, it is see you later. That is what faith is. ❤
I pray that God would give you that faith, and you would hold it close to your heart all your life. That you would have comfort in knowing someday you will be with Jesus, but not only that, you will be with your grandma and all who believe, forever 🌹
