O Come
Hillsong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O come, O come,
Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel
Shall come to thee,
O Israel.
Oh come, Thou Dayspring,
come and cheer
Thy people with
Thine advent here;
Disperse the glommy
clouds of night
And death's dark
shadows put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel
Shall come to thee,
O Israel.
Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own fromSatan's tyranny
From depths of Hell
Thy people save
And give them victory
o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel

Shall come to thee,
O Israel.

Overall Meaning

The song "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is a hymn that is known as one of the most beloved and well-known Christmas carols in the world. It is a song that speaks of the longing of the Israelites for the arrival of the promised Messiah. The lyrics are based on the seven "O Antiphons," which are prayers that were used by the early Christian church during the Advent season. These prayers are said on the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve, and each one focuses on a different aspect of the Messiah's coming.

The first verse of the song speaks of Emmanuel, which means "God with us." The Israelites were a captive people, living in exile and waiting for the promised Messiah to come and deliver them. The verse asks for the Messiah to come and ransom the captive Israel, bringing them out of their exile and into the light of God's presence. The verse ends with the refrain "Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel," a reminder that even in the midst of darkness and captivity, there is hope in the promise of the Messiah's coming.

The second verse of the song speaks of the Dayspring, which means "the rising of the sun." It describes the coming of the Messiah as a time of great joy and hope, as he will bring light into the darkness and dispel the gloomy clouds of night. The verse ends with the refrain "Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel," a reminder that the coming of the Messiah is a reason for great joy and celebration.

The third verse of the song speaks of the Rod of Jesse, which is a symbol of the Messiah's lineage from the house of King David. It asks the Messiah to free his people from the tyranny of Satan and to save them from the depths of Hell. It ends with the refrain "Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel," a reminder that the coming of the Messiah is the ultimate victory over death and sin.

Overall, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is a song of longing for the promised Messiah, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope in the promise of God's deliverance and salvation.

Hillsong Worship is awesome. I am in chorus in my 4th grade elementary class here in Georgia and, this is the song that I am practicing. It is an awesome song and sometimes we forget the true meaning of this great holiday. We just need to remember that Jesus's birth is the most important thing here. Not the presents.

@dalesajdak422

This is definitely the best version of this song I’ve heard. Well done Hillsong.
