You Said
Hillsong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said, "ask and you will receive
Whatever you need"
You said, "pray and I'll hear from heaven,
And I'll heal your land"

You said Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea
You said, "lift up your eyes;
The harvest is here, the kingdom is near"

You said, "ask and I'll give the nations to you"
Oh Lord, that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
Your light, as it rises on us

(You said), You said, Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea (you said)
You said, "Lift up your eyes
The harvest is here, the Kingdom is near"

You said, "Ask and I'll give the nations to you"
Oh, Lord, that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
Your light, as it rises on us

You said, "Ask and I'll give the nations to you"
Oh, Lord, that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
Your light, as it rises on us

You said, "Ask and I'll give the nations to you"
Oh, Lord, that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
Your light, as it rises on us
You said that we believe

Oh, Lord, I ask for the nation
Oh, Lord, I ask for the nation
Even though you was there Lord

Oh, Lord, I ask for the nation
Oh, Lord, I ask for the nation

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hillsong's song "You Said" are a reminder of God's promises and the power that comes with faith. The song is inspired by the words of Jesus in the Bible, where He said that when we ask, we will receive, when we pray, He will hear from heaven, and when we seek Him, we will find Him. The chorus repeats the line, "You said Your glory will fill the earth," emphasizing the belief that God's love and glory will spread throughout the world like water in the sea. The song also emphasizes the importance of evangelism; that we should ask for the nations and that distant shores and islands will see God's light as it rises on us.

The song is significant for many people as it speaks to the power of faith and the importance of spreading the faith to others. It is a call to action for Christians to be ambassadors of God's love and to share His message with the world. The lyrics are simple but powerful, and the music adds to the spiritual and emotional impact of the song.

Overall, "You Said" is a poignant reminder of God's promises and the importance of faith in our lives. It is an encouragement to continue believing, praying, and seeking God, and to share His love and light with those around us.

I miss the old Hillsong under the leadership of Darlene Zschech. I believe one the reason they rose to the top was because they put Jesus before themselves. I don't think they wanted to be stars, but as they made Jesus the star, He exalted them and in my opinion they became the best Christian singing group in the world. Their albums in the 90s and the first decade of 2000 testify to this. I had the privilege of visiting Hillsong Church in Baulkham Hills, Australia in 2007. I took the bus there from Sydney. As I remember, people from different nations lined up to get on buses to go to attend the Church at Baulkham Hills. This happened because by this time, they were internationally known. The new generation singers are good also, but this old group will always have a special place in my heart. Their songs were and still are a blessing! Perhaps another reason why a number of us like this old group is because I don't think up until they arrived, no singing Christian group to my knowledge had done what they did.
