You Said
Hillsongs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said, "ask and you will receive whatever you need."
You said, "pray and I'll hear from heaven,
And I'll heal your land."

You said Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea.
You said, "lift up your eyes;
The harvest is here, the kingdom is near."

You said, "ask and I'll give the nations to you."

Oh Lord, that's the cry of my heart.
Distant shores and the islands will see

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Hillsong Music Australia's song You Said speak of the promises of God and the faith that derives from them. The song highlights the reassurance that we can get from God's word- whatever we ask, it shall be given. The first stanza communicates the message that if we pray to God, he will answer us and heal the world. The second stanza emphasizes on the magnificence of the glory of God and his promise that it will fill the earth like water in the sea. The lyrics also talk about the end time where the kingdom of God will be near, and the harvest of souls will be ready. The third and final sentence expresses the longing of the believer's heart, to ask for the nations of the earth, salvation to all people regardless of their location.

Overall, the song portrays the message of the Christian faith, and that faith is rooted in the promises God made to his people as found in Jesus Christ. The assurance of prayer, the promise of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of the resurrection is elegantly expressed through the lyrics of the song. The song, You Said, served as an encouragement for faith in God amidst uncertainties and fear. It, therefore, encourages believers to keep the faith and trust in God, even in the midst of trials.

I miss the old Hillsong under the leadership of Darlene Zschech. I believe one the reason they rose to the top was because they put Jesus before themselves. I don't think they wanted to be stars, but as they made Jesus the star, He exalted them and in my opinion they became the best Christian singing group in the world. Their albums in the 90s and the first decade of 2000 testify to this. I had the privilege of visiting Hillsong Church in Baulkham Hills, Australia in 2007. I took the bus there from Sydney. As I remember, people from different nations lined up to get on buses to go to attend the Church at Baulkham Hills. This happened because by this time, they were internationally known. The new generation singers are good also, but this old group will always have a special place in my heart. Their songs were and still are a blessing! Perhaps another reason why a number of us like this old group is because I don't think up until they arrived, no singing Christian group to my knowledge had done what they did.
