Don McGuire, the last surviving member of the Hilltoppers, died Friday (September 7, 2018) at his Hazard, Kentucky home at the age of 87, after what was described as a 'short illness'...
The group, named after the school team of Western Kentucky State College, where they were students, were inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2013...
The quartet's two biggest hits* were "Marianne" {#3 in 1957} and "P.S. I Love You" {#4 in 1953}...
May he R.I.P.
* As noted above "From the Vine Came The Grape" reached #8 in 1954 and it was their seventh of nine Top 10 records...

What a great year 1954 was! Met my 2 lifelong best friends and my beautiful wife! Also graduated from South High. This song was popular when I met my 2 friends.

What a song!!!!

Matthew Jury

It was written by Leonard Whitcup and Paul Cunningham and published in 1954. The biggest-selling version was recorded by The Gaylords in 1954. It was also a hit for The Hilltoppers the same year.

this sounds like an alternate version, as i bought the original when it came out in '54. Is it? Does anyone know?

This came out the year I met my 2 best friends and also met the girl who would become my wife. One of my friends lives in Arizona and the other in California. We are still best friends. I was wed to my wife in 1955 and we were together till her passing in 2011.

When I was a kid, I assumed that this was a cover of the Gaylords. It was Dot, after all. Now, I'm not so sure; this was a B side to 'Time Will Tell', a nice song which hit the charts 3 weeks before either version of 'Vine'. Does anyone out there know for sure?

clarence fender

I don't think they played the Gaylords version where I lived.
