Nothin' Good About Goodbye
Hinder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rolled up my sleeves today
'Cause I thought that this was over
But then you called to say
You forgot that broach of your mother's

And every time I try to cut the cord
You come crawling back with some excuse
You forgot something

There's nothing good about goodbye
I could swear I saw you cry
Always knew you'd wind up falling, falling harder
Nothing good about goodbye
Just say goodbye

Rolled up my sleeves today
'Cause I thought that this had ended
But then you called again
To tell me how you're gonna blow my best friend

And every time I try to cut the cord
You come crawling back with some excuse
You forgot something

There's nothing good about goodbye
I can swear I saw you cry
Always knew you'd wind up falling, falling harder
Every story has two sides
In the he-said-she-said fight
But you'll always wind up falling, falling harder
Nothing good about goodbye
Just say goodbye

Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder

There's nothing good about goodbye
I can swear I saw you cry
I always knew you'd wind up falling, falling harder
Every story has two sides
In the he-said-she-said fight
She'll always wind up falling, falling harder
Nothing good about goodbye
Just say goodbye
There's nothing good about goodbye
Just say goodbye

Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart
Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart

Falling, falling harder
You're falling apart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hinder’s song Nothin’ Good About Goodbye tell the story of a relationship that seems to be over and yet, the singer keeps getting pulled back in by his partner’s excuses and manipulations. Rolling up his sleeves suggests a sense of determination and readiness to move on, but each time he tries to cut the emotional cord, she calls him back to retrieve something forgotten or to share some new information that keeps him emotionally bound to her. In the second verse, she goes so far as to threaten to cheat on him with his best friend, proving that she will stop at nothing to keep him in her grasp.

The chorus suggests that there is nothing positive or good about ending the relationship, and that the painful breakup will be inevitable. Despite this, the singer seems to be urging his partner to simply say goodbye and move on from the situation. The repetition of “falling, falling harder” at the end of the song implies that the consequences of staying in the relationship will be severe and that the singer’s partner is slowly but surely losing herself and falling apart.

The song is a powerful and emotional break-up anthem that perfectly captures the difficulty of ending a toxic relationship. While the lyrics are straightforward and relatable, the song’s dark, moody production elevates them to a new level of emotion and depth. The intensity of the song's message coupled with the energy and emotion of the delivery makes it a memorable and impactful piece of music.

Listening to this brings nostalgia, it's refreshing listening to this band's music right now in 2023.

I absolutely love this song. I think it's one of the very few perfect songs, up there with Drive by Incubus, Little Things by Bush, Dust in the Wind by Kansas, or Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye.
All the same, the part where he sings, '...but then you called today, to tell me how you're gonna BLOW my best friend...' makes me chuckle every time.
This is still my all-time favorite break-up song, after one-too-many flings with wild, frothy women.
