Solitary in stone
Taken by force, a prisoner of war
Time lets us know we're alone
Time, wearing my life down
Inside the walls surrounded
Destined to be damned, by the iron hand
[CHORUS:]
Breakout, breakout
Breakout, breakout
Held in a state of motionless time
Determined to find my way out
Fighting to live I'm fearing to die
The choices are clear but I can't decide
These chains holding my life down
No longer keep me bound
Destined to be damned by the iron hand
[CHORUS]
Gone is the pain
But still in my mind are the memories
And scars that remain
For once I had lived as a slave, a prisoner enchained
But at last I have found my way out, it's so good to be free!
[CHORUS]
In "Breakout," Hittman uses vivid and powerful imagery to convey the feeling of being stuck and trapped in life. The first few lines immediately establish a sense of confinement with the image of being locked up behind "iron doors" and solitary in stone. The second line, "Time lets us know we're alone," further emphasizes the feeling of being trapped and immobile. The use of the word "alone" in this context is especially poignant, as it implies that even though one may be surrounded by others, they can still feel completely isolated and cut off from the rest of the world.
As the song progresses, the singer begins to rebel against their confines. They are determined to break free, even though they are "held in a state of motionless time." The choices may be clear to the singer, but they are still afraid of what lies ahead, as they fight to live but fear to die. Overall, "Breakout" is a song about the human spirit's enduring desire for freedom, even in the face of great adversity and confinement.
