The song also explores themes of sexual exploitation at the hands of others and of oneself.
"Violet" peaked at number 29 on the Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks after the album's release in 1994, and is arguably one of Hole's most well-known songs. It charted at number 116 on The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born list by Blender magazine in 2005.

Maybe, but not all her pain. truth be told a lot of the music and some of the lyrics were written by Kurt Cobain. If you listen to music by Hole prior to this album it was a pretty different sound and you can hear Kurt's work and influence all throughout Live Through This. Although history would have us believe differently since Hole kind of represented girl power in a genre dominated by men. So Courtney received a bulk of the credit. And that's not to say that she isn't talented! She is in her own right. I think she needed the help though making the transition from underground to being a mainstream band.

I once dated a woman who repeated tried to kill herself, until she was successful years ago. As difficult of a person she was, gosh to this day I love that woman to death. I never associated Courtney with Kurt, always kept them separate as artists, but imagine what she went through after Kurt committed suicide. Courtney kept going, and I was happy to see her with Hole in concert in 1995. Back in those days my life was a mess, and that band's performance was amazing.

Brave? What did she have to lose from outing Weinstein? She already has FU money from her inherited ownership stake in Nirvana, and film wise she already went as far as she will with award nominations from "The People vs. Larry Flint". As far as Hole, most successful albums "Live Through This" must have had some influence from Kurt, not that he full on wrote the songs but helped Courtney round it out. There is admittedly no direct evidence of this. "Celebrity Skin" Billy Corgan co-wrote five songs that- no one disputes; and although Courtney tried to minimize his contribution, I'm going to have to side with Corgan that's BS. In fact Hole's bassist Melissa Auf der Maur who co-composed five of "Celebrity Skin" songs left the band and joined Corgan in Smashing Pumpkins after. I like Hole's music, and I appreciate Courtney speaking up so publicly when no one else had at that time, but... uh... sorry to rain on your BRAVE and STRONG parade.

❤I dunno man, there's something about Courtney Love/Hole's music makes a troubled woman strong. I've heard more than half a dozen stories not including mine about how Hole/Courtney saved their lives or got them through a difficult time. I played Live Through This a couple hundred times during summer 1999 when I had a nervous breakdown and recuperated at home. This song and the others made me strong emotionally and before I knew it I was strong, spoke up for myself and dump my over possessive, psychopath boyfriend. Those songs fed me strength and a fuck you attitude. Got me through the hardest times. Courtney and Hole gave me balls but most of all, gave me a "voice."❤

I couldn't agree more. Album is awesome. Not a bad track. I'd be ok if this was all I could listen to. I was in grad school working in a lab on the weekend and I had this album cranked so loud I didn't hear the fire alarm. Exited the lab to do something and "oh shit". Fortunately no fire. My other fave was this undergrad saying "I just want to get up on stage and scream". Courtney could howl. And I appreciate that. The foot on the monitor. Great stance. Sexy toughness.

It's hilarious that people think kurt didn't even help her with the songs on ltt when she's had a musician produce/ write on everything else she's done, every album..and her best one she did all by herself when she was with cobain, lmao even the themes in the lyrics of the album are all kurt themes he used as analogies...sickness, witch hunts, dolls...and the music sounds like nirvana..it's amazing how clueless can be when it comes to their idols. I met bartender in Seattle who told me Kurt would wash dishes there and perform sometimes at his bar, he said Courtney was the sweetest girl you'd ever met their chemistry was uncanny, she was literally a female version of him, Kurt wasn't the only person to die that day Courtney did too.
