Hollow Godric (a juxtaposition of J.K Rowling's fictional village Godric's Hollow) is the detailed effort of Brandon Blair. Though accoustic in nature, Blair along with accomplices Sam Tucker (Backing Vocals) Tyler Donaldson (Percussion), and Nathaniel DeBoer (Percussion) delicately infuse their songs with a bevy of elements ranging from jazz to classical, folk and even hints of rock. Defying all modern stigmas Blair manages to include a majority of songs with celtic inspired winds that could only be described as ethereal.
It is these characteristics, along with Blair and Tucker's uncanny ability to harmonize (primarily on standout track The Winter Burrow) that make Hollow Godric's debut album Portraits truly unique.
The album's leadoff song, The Trainride, offers a nostalgic remembrance of that old familiar feeling one has when returning to school after a long summer hiatus. The song, though festive in feel, is belied only by content (see lyrics: "so now we sit and take what's left of summer's final breath"). The album's title track follows, bringing visions of portrait endowed hallways wandered with good company.
But it is the aforementioned Winter Burrow where Hollow Godric, and Blair's talent for song-smithing truly shines. Harmonies drift in and out with tales of friends, family and even magical battle (amongst twins, no less), painting a beautiful winterscape for our viewing pleasure. (Did I mention that they're a "Wizard Rock band"?)
And yet all is not fair and well in Godric's Hollow as displayed in darker songs such as The Grim's Lament and the Vigil. Haunting lyrics accompanied by morose guitars (the finest on the album) blend to tell dirging tales of despair and misfortune.
Foregoing misused and often overused dramatic subjects, Blair instead focuses on more basic feelings like those of friendship, adventure, survival and songs of farewell and departure. It is these musings and the painstaking effort instilled in them that prove Hollow Godric's sound is anything but hollow.

When I ran into you
So let us walk as one
Just us two
We'll walk away the day
No place to end up
Find portraits on display
And greet them on their way
I wish for this the most
To one day be the same
Lost in eternal spring
Within one of these frames
I'd sleep beneath that tree
The one by the lakeside
As sun came sifting down
To illuminate you at my side
The perfect picture, am I right?
You will become part of me
Like leaf to twig and branch to tree tonight
I walk here on my own
Whenever I need time
To hide away alone
Here's a secret:
The halls, they are alive
As life goes on inside
So many worlds collide
In Blues and Reds
The perfect picture, am I right?
The song "Portraits" by Hollow Godric explores the idea of finding solace in art and nature when feeling lost, alone or in need of escape. The opening lines convey chance encounters and the idea of walking together as a way to offer companionship and support. The verses describe the desire to find and connect with portraits that capture the essence of eternal beauty and offer a glimpse of a life beyond the current reality. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing for the idealized world of art, where one can find everlasting beauty and peace. The chorus expresses the hope of being able to become part of one of those portraits and be forever captured next to a loved one, lying beneath a tree as the sun illuminates the scene. The final lines seem to suggest that the halls of the world are full of life and constant movement, but amidst the relentless noise and chaos, one can find moments of stillness and beauty, like the blues and reds of a painting.
The song is a melancholic and introspective reflection on the human condition and our search for meaning in a complex and unpredictable world. It offers a message of hope that we can find solace and beauty in art, nature and the company of others, even when we feel lost or alone. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they convey deep emotions and evoke vivid imagery that transports the listener into a dreamlike world of portraits and landscapes.
