human
Holly Starr feat. Matthew Parker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take a second, take a breath
Take a break from all the pressure
You got problems, we all do
But that's just part of the adventure oh-oh-oh

What if mistakes aren't such a bad thing?
What if they make you who you are?
What is a story with no struggle?
You can't see the stars without the dark

Maybe we could never be perfect people, but maybe that's ok
Maybe we could never be oh so flawless, in every single way
Maybe that's what makes us human, that's what makes us feel
Maybe that's what makes us humans, know that grace is real

You been trying, trying so hard
But you don't gotta be the hero (the hero)
You got issues, we all do
Don't be afraid to let go-oh-oh-oh

What if mistakes aren't such a bad thing?
What if they make you who you are?
What is a story with no struggle?
You can't see the stars without the dark

Maybe we could never be perfect people, but maybe that's ok
Maybe we could never be oh so flawless, in every single way
Maybe that's what makes us human, that's what makes us feel (that's what makes us feel)
Maybe that's what makes us humans, know that grace is real

People telling us to dress like this, and talk like this
So perfect like this, but nobody can do it
You be you, and I'll be me
We sing our harmonies together like ya do it

Sometimes we need room to be human
We're not angels after all
It's time we see right through the illusion
We're just human after all

(Maybe, we could, never be perfect)
(Maybe, we could, never be flawless)

Maybe we could never be perfect people, but maybe that's ok (maybe that's ok)
Maybe we could never be oh so flawless, in every single way (every single way)
Maybe that's what makes us human, that's what makes us feel (that's what makes us feel)
Maybe that's what makes us humans, know that grace is real

What if all our tears and our fears and our flaws are beautiful things
Cause everything that makes us human brings us to our knees

Overall Meaning

The song "Human" by Holly Starr featuring Matthew Parker is an uplifting and inspiring message to its listeners. It begins by encouraging the listener to take a break from the pressures of life and acknowledge that everyone has problems. Rather than being ashamed of their mistakes, the song suggests that mistakes make people who they are and that struggle is necessary for a good story. It goes on to emphasize that being imperfect is what makes humans unique and that grace is real.

The chorus repeats the message that being perfectly flawless is unattainable, but that's alright because being human and imperfect is what makes people genuine and relatable. The bridge addresses how society often dictates how people should look and act, but the song chooses to celebrate uniqueness and individuality. The final verse reminds the listener that it's alright to be human and not an angel, and that struggle and imperfection can lead to beautiful things.

In all, the song reminds people to be true to themselves and embrace their unique qualities, even if they are not perfect. It encourages listeners to not be afraid of mistakes and to be proud of who they are.

Dear Holly Starr,
I am a big fan and normally love your music especially your lyrics. However, I am
troubled by the lyrics in this song. I am worried that what this song could be
communicating to other people is that sin is not such a bad thing and that it’s
ok that we sin because it is who we are, how we were born, and is beautiful. I
am sure that you would agree that sin is serious and separated us from God. In
fact, sin was so serious that Jesus had to suffer excruciating pain on the
cross. Also, I am not sure what “we need room to be human” is supposed to mean.
Can you clarify what message you were intending to communicate in this song?
Thank you for your work.
Sincerely,
Grant Klentzman
