Outside
Hollywood Undead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone left the door open
Who left me outside
I'm bent, I'm not broken
Come live in my life
All the words left unspoken
Are the pages I write
On my knees and I'm hoping
That someone holds me tonight
Hold me tonight

Welcome to the world and all the land in it was wasted
The blood upon your hands and the wickedness that made it
Sing or scream it all and the memories keep fading
See the exit wound, dear God what have we taken?
Guess I'll say a prayer and I'll kiss into the air
I'll look into the sky, send them straight to nowhere
We all dug the grave, can't shake away the shame
Quiver in the sky but you're shaken all the same
You left us with the guns and all of them unloaded
Teach us how to shoot but you taught us how to hold them
All the weight of all the world is right between your shoulders
Heavy is the heart when the world keeps growing colder

Who left the door open
Who left me outside
I'm on my knees and I'm hoping
That someone holds me tonight
Hold me tonight

Two sides to every story, here's a little morning glory
Breakfast of a mirror, dying slow seems a little boring
Burning like a flag, walking straight into the breeze
'Cause there's two types of people, you are weak or you are me
Yeah what's another life time like mine
We all die a little sometimes, it's alright
Did you come to say your goodbyes to this life?
We all hurt a little sometimes, we're alright
So mothers hold your children, don't you ever let 'em go
There is weakness in your grip and they are holding all our hope
Don't you ever let me go (Don't you ever let me go)
Don't you ever let me go (Don't you ever let me go)

Who left the door open
Who left me outside
I'm on my knees and I'm hoping
That someone holds me tonight
Hold me tonight

Someone left the door open
Who left me outside
I'm bent, I'm not broken
Come live in my life
All the words left unspoken
Are the pages I write
On my knees and I'm hoping

That someone holds me tonight
Hold me tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Outside" by Hollywood Undead can be interpreted as a reflection of the sense of loneliness and lack of connection with others that many people feel at times, despite living in a world where we are surrounded by others. The repeated refrain of "Who left me outside" highlights the feeling of being left out or excluded from social connections, while the lines "All the weight of all the world is right between your shoulders, Heavy is the heart when the world keeps growing colder" suggest that the burden of living in a world that is becoming more disconnected and divided is taking a toll on everyone's mental and emotional wellbeing.

It seems like the song is also about the impact of violence and conflict on society, as lyricist John Feldmann writes "See the exit wound, dear God what have we taken?" and "We all dug the grave, can't shake away the shame". The lines "Teach us how to shoot but you taught us how to hold them" could be interpreted as a commentary on how violence begets more violence, and how even those who are taught to use weapons as a means of self-defence or protection can end up using them to inflict harm.

Overall, the song "Outside" explores themes of isolation, vulnerability, violence and the struggle to connect with others in a world that can be harsh and unforgiving.

Someone left the door open
Who left me outside?
I’m bent, I’m not broken
Come live in my life
All the words left unspoken
All the pages I write
On my knees, and I’m hoping
That someone holds me tonight
Hold me tonight

[Johnny 3 Tears:]
Welcome to the world and all the land in it was wasted
The blood upon your hands and the wickedness that made it
Sing or scream it all and the memories keep fading
See the exit wound, dear God, what have we taken?
Guess I’ll say a prayer and I’ll kiss into the air

Who left the door open?
Who left me outside?

I was 12 when I first found Hollywood Undead and 14 when I finally found this song. I haven't listened to it in years. I'm 20 now and here I am, honestly crying over this because it always said the words that I wanted to. Back then I didn't have good friends, music was all I had, and I was struggling with mental issues I never even understood. Now I'm all grown up, unmasking my neurodivergency, learning to deal with my BPD and PTSD as well as my anxiety, OCD, and social anxiety. I've been through a lot since then, but I've found good friends and soon I'll be away from the home that brought me so much misery. I searched for this song over the last few years, unable to remember the words or the name. Going through Hollywood Undead to share songs with my friend and I finally found it. No matter how much time passes, I'll always love HU.

When I tell people I like Hollywood Undead, they instantly think of all the party songs, such as Everywhere I Go, Pigskin, etc. I wish I could speak in links so they could see songs like this, Rain, Sing, stuff like that, and just see that they aren't just another group of party rockers, but an actual, legitimate, deep-thinking band with a decent following of loyal listeners. Oh well.
