Holy Ghost!ās most recent release, 2015ās remix alum Work for Hire, was a mesmerizing time capsule of remixes that boldly traced the groupās aesthetic from their nascent days dabbling in groove to radical rethinkings of songs. It was, in certain ways, a necessary stepping stone to Crime Cutz. āWork for Hire was a good breather from working on original music,ā Alex says. āIt was a good way to get back into the studio. Thereās a lot of pressure when youāre writing original stuff. We were able to focus more on groove and arrangement, rather than trying to write formative pop songs.ā
The objective, Nick says of the forthcoming collection, was singular: āAesthetically, Alex and I were musically, melodically trying to do soā Some artists make music really rapidlyāthey put out mixtapes on SoundCloud, like, every few months,ā Alex Frankel ruminates. Of course, Frankel and his Holy Ghost! bandmate Nick Millhiser do not fall into that category. āWeāre so envious of that.ā Theyāre again adding to their dance repertoire with the vibrant Crime Cutz EP out later this year on DFA Records.

And I think of what I said to them
And I guess for once I can't pretend
So I hold my breath
What a perfect chance to start again
Through the TV set, we don't need it
And I guess for once I can't pretend
When I look around and I am not at home
From the TV set, you're not alone
And I guess for once I got no regrets
So I hold my breath
Stop looking out for someone else
When you are inside there is no reason
And I guess for once I can't pretend
So I hold my breath, so I hold my breath
Take some money from the joint account
I know, I know I know I am running out but
I found a woman in a photograph
Good guess, good guess, good guess so
I hold my breath
Take some money from the joint account
I know, I know I know I am running out but
I found a woman in a photograph
Good guess, good guess, good guess so
I hold my breath
Take some money from the joint account
I know, I know I know I am running out but
I found a woman in a photograph
Good guess, good guess, good guess so
I hold my breath
Take some money from the joint account
I know, I know I know I am running out but
I found a woman in a photograph
Good guess, good guess, good guess so
I hold my breath
Take some money from the joint account
I know, I know I know I am running out but
I found a woman in a photograph
Good guess, good guess, good guess so I
One interpretation of Holy Ghost!'s song Hold My Breath suggests that the singer is reflecting on their past behavior towards their friends and taking responsibility for their mistakes. The lyrics "When I look around at all my friends / And I think of what I said to them / And I guess for once I can't pretend / So I hold my breath" suggests a sense of regret and a recognition of the singer's role in damaging the relationships. The lines "What a perfect chance to start again / Through the TV set, we don't need it" can be interpreted as the singer realizing that they don't need external distractions to avoid confronting their mistakes and taking steps to move forward.
The chorus refers to the singer holding their breath, which can represent an act of self-control, a way of calming oneself down, or just a metaphor for pausing and reflecting on one's actions. The line "Stop looking out for someone else / When you are inside there is no reason" can be interpreted as the singer urging themselves to focus on their own inner self-improvement rather than external validation from others.
The second verse mentions taking money from a joint account and finding a woman in a photograph. It's possible that these are specific incidents that triggered the singer's reflection on their behavior towards their friends, or they could be symbolic references to the singer's past mistakes or regrets. Overall, the song has a reflective and introspective tone, with a sense of hope for a new beginning and a commitment to taking responsibility for one's actions.

It seems like I've been here before tonight
It seems like I've been here before
I'd like to TV, talk, and advertise
We peddle candy door to door
And hold tight, don't make more plans
And don't talk, don't say no words
And be still, now move like this
And hold on until we kiss
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
Why do the good things happen in the past?
Streamline the news and trim the fat
I love the city but I hate my job
And this old city loves me back
It's like a scream inside a scream
They can trace it through the night into the church
It seems it's never going to end
Until our life cuts through the air into the womb
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
It's like a scream inside a scream
It seems it's never going to end
It's like a scream inside a scream
It seems it's never going to end
And hold tight, don't make more plans
And don't talk, don't say no words
And be still, now move like this
And hold on until we kiss
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight
And hold on
And hold tight.
