Songbirds
Homecomings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fell asleep in a shelter,
Made out of old junk,
After the storm.
No clue where we're flying to,
Feeling so anxious.
Each spring time,
We're flapping about like plastic bags.
The ghosts banished from my diary,
Which I burnt in early summer.

A rustling sound in the corridor,
Somewhere in my heart.
Through the frosted window,
If I was aware of the eyes behind the lens,
How would I sing?
Golden reflections of our life,
In the afternoon sunlight.
Chocolates melting in my pocket.

By making it a song,
Can I keep the memory?
I just came to love it now.

The two lines come close and then get away.

Some easy tricks on Cat's Cradle,
That I can't do so well any more.
On a musical stave,
Seasons pass so fast.
Each spring time,
We're floating there like balloons.

The ghosts banished from my diary,
Which I burnt in early summer.

A rustling sound in the corridor,
Somewhere in my heart.
Through the frosted window,
If I was aware of the eyes behind the lens,
How would I sing?
Golden reflections of our life,
In the afternoon sunlight.
Chocolates melting in my pocket.

By making it a song,
Can I keep the memory?
I just came to love it now.

By making it a song,

Can I keep the memory?
I just came to love it now.

Overall Meaning

Homecomings' "Songbirds" is an introspective song that explores the themes of memory, nostalgia, and finding solace in music. The opening lines depict a sense of desolation and vulnerability as the singer falls asleep in a shelter made out of old junk after a storm. The uncertainty of their destination and the feeling of anxiety that follows is palpable in the second line, "No clue where we're flying to, feeling so anxious."

The chorus brings in a touch of optimism as the singer reflects on the possibility of keeping memories alive by making them into songs. The ghosts that once haunted their diary have been banished, and through the frosted window, the singer wonders how they would sing if aware of the eyes behind the lens. The afternoon sunlight brings golden reflections of their life, and chocolates melting in their pocket evoke a sense of comfort and joy. The repetition of the line, "By making it a song, can I keep the memory? I just came to love it now," highlights the importance of music in preserving memories and finding meaning in them.

The song's verses also touch on the passing of time, with the recurring imagery of springtime and the changing of seasons. The simple pleasures of childhood, such as playing Cat's Cradle, evoke a sense of loss as the singer realizes they can no longer perform the tricks. Despite the introspective and melancholic themes, "Songbirds" ends on a hopeful note as the singer finds solace in making music and keeping memories alive through it.

@Mochitq

(By making it a song, Can I keep the memory?)

@mtoshi1022

@doryuji

@yorimoi1101
