Remember Me
Hoobastank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stand here face to face
With someone that I used to know
He used to look at me and laugh

But now he claims
That he's known me for so very long
But I remember being no one
I wanted to be just like you
So perfect, so untouchable
Now you want me to be with you
Someone who used to have it all

Do you remember now?
You acted like you never noticed me
Forget it
Cause the gone has come around
You're not allowed to be a part of me

Did you know me?
Or were you too preoccupied
With playing king in your new kingdom
And now the real world
Has stripped you of your royalty
And from your kingdom you're evicted

I wanted to be just like you
So perfect, so untouchable
Now you want me to be with you
Someone who used to have it all

Do you remember now?
You acted like you never noticed me
Forget it
Cause the gone has come around
You're not allowed to be a part of me

Part of me [Repeat: x3]

You're never going to be part of me [Repeat: x6]

Do you remember now?
You acted like you never noticed me
Forget it
Cause the gone has come around
You're not allowed to be a part of me

Part of me [Repeat: x3]

Overall Meaning

Hoobastank's Remember Me is a song that focuses on the theme of personal growth, self-realization, and self-discovery. The song talks about standing face to face with someone from the past, someone who used to look at the singer at the time when he was no one. The person in question now claims to have known the singer for a very long time, but the singer vividly remembers being absolutely insignificant to that person in the past. The lyrics suggest that the singer had once idolized the person he is now facing, someone who he saw as perfect and untouchable.

The mood of the song takes a turn when the person who once used to be the singer's icon asks to be with the singer. Ironically, this same person is no longer the perfect and untouchable one. He has been evicted from his kingdom of royalty in the real world. The chorus is an invitation to the person from the past who is seeking acceptance: "Do you remember now? You acted like you never noticed me. Forget it, 'cause the gone has come around. You're not allowed to be a part of me." Essentially, the singer is telling that person that he's moved on and that they can never be part of each other's lives.

This is my favorite song by Hoobastank and I got to watch them perform it last night in the rain and they have not missed a beat. They were extremely tight live.
