The original lineup was notable for having three guitars and no bass player, creating a distinctive, layered sound. Kimble Rendall left in 1982 before the release of their first single, Leilani, and went on to become a noted music video director. He was effectively replaced by bassist Clyde Bramley. Radalj was not happy with Rendall's departure or Faulkner's increasing influence, and left the band himself, to be replaced by one-time Fun Things guitarist Brad Shepherd. This line-up released the band's break-through first album, Stoneage Romeos, in 1984.
In 1998, the band officially split but reformed for occasional concerts in subsequent years. A full-fledged reunion came in 2004, when they released Mach Schau and began touring again. The band received another boost when Come Anytime (from 1989's Magnum Cum Louder) was used as the theme song to the Australian TV show Thank God You're Here.

Desiree
Hoodoo Gurus Lyrics

Sunshine on my skin
Oceans away from the rest of our lives
And still we both fell in.
I was alone - I found you
So far from home - tell me
What else could I do ?
My world turned itself all inside out
You were like nobody else I've known
Hey, what are you about ?
Cold and alone - I was there
Ooh, what you've done
Do you know how much I care ?
I thought someday, somewhere, somehow...
But who am I fooling
Desiree will never ever know ... oh, no...
We could have tried something new, girl
But you lied, now I can't believe it's true
You knew I'd never find you
Maybe someday you'll change your mind
About what will ever be
Make it a day when the sun will shine
Again for you and me...
'Cause I can't shake you.
Desiree...maybe some day...
The Hoodoo Gurus's song Desiree is a melancholic love song that tells the story of a man's intense love for a woman named Desiree. The first stanza of the song alludes to the rising sun that radiates warmth and brightness, which the singer likens to the love he felt for Desiree. Despite being oceans away from their regular life, the two of them fell in love, captivated by each other's allure.
The second stanza describes the transformative effect that Desiree had on the singer when they first met. The world was turned inside out, and he found himself drawn to her uniqueness. He was cold and lonely before she walked into his life and showed him the depth of his feelings for her.
The chorus hints at a sense of loss and regret regarding the relationship that could have been, but could never be. The singer wishes that things could have been different, but the reality is that Desiree will never know just how much he cared for her. The final stanza, however, is a ray of hope. The singer declares that he cannot shake his attachment to her, and he might be willing to give their love another chance if she changes her mind someday.
Overall, the song conveys a deep sense of longing and heartbreak. The singer lays bare his feelings and the regrets he harbors, wishing for a different outcome to a love that was complicated, intense, and ultimately unfulfilled.
