The original lineup was notable for having three guitars and no bass player, creating a distinctive, layered sound. Kimble Rendall left in 1982 before the release of their first single, Leilani, and went on to become a noted music video director. He was effectively replaced by bassist Clyde Bramley. Radalj was not happy with Rendall's departure or Faulkner's increasing influence, and left the band himself, to be replaced by one-time Fun Things guitarist Brad Shepherd. This line-up released the band's break-through first album, Stoneage Romeos, in 1984.
In 1998, the band officially split but reformed for occasional concerts in subsequent years. A full-fledged reunion came in 2004, when they released Mach Schau and began touring again. The band received another boost when Come Anytime (from 1989's Magnum Cum Louder) was used as the theme song to the Australian TV show Thank God You're Here.

He's so caught up that he don't know which way is up
You know the saying that there no saint like a former sinner
Well he's evangelizing everyone he meets
Including me
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
I hope it makes you, feel real good
Even then you better, knock on wood
Yeah you better just, knock on wood
Another girl I know loves hanging with cosmetic surgeons
She's on a first name basis with a cutting edge
(Ah Aah Aaaaah) Now shes addicted to the thrill of multiple procedures
(Ah Aah Aaaaah) looks in the mirror and she doesn't see herself
But there's no one else
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
I hope it makes you feel real good
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Even then you better, knock on wood
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
I hope it makes you feel real good
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Even then you better, knock on wood
I'm telling you, knock on wood
My neighbours getting into transcendental meditation
He's found the inner piece that many of us seek
(Ah Aah Aaaaah) But I'm not cut out for that life of quiet contemplation
(Ah Aah Aaaaah) cause when I naval gaze I only turn up lindt
Well it makes you think
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
I hope it makes you feel real good
I hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Even then you better, knock on wood
Hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Well I hope you feel real good
Hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Even then you better, knock on wood
I want you to, knock on wood
Just let me be, understood
I wanna be, understood
Can I get a witness (can I get a witness)
Can I get a witness (can I get a witness)
Witness, witness (witness, witness)
Witness, witness (witness, witness)
Can, I get a witness (can, I get a witness)
Can I get a witness (can I get a witness)
Can I get a, witness, witness yeah, witness yeah
Hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
I hope it makes you feel real good
Hope it makes you happy (hope it makes you happy)
Even then you better, knock on wood
Hope it makes you happy, happy
I want you to, I want you to, be happy
Are you happy? I hope you're happy
The Hoodoo Gurus' song "I Hope You're Happy" is a commentary on the different ways people try to find happiness in their lives. The song has three verses, each describing a different person who has committed themselves to a different way of seeking happiness. One person has joined a new religion and is evangelizing to others, while another has become addicted to plastic surgery, and the third has turned to transcendental meditation for inner peace. In each case, the singer expresses the hope that these pursuits bring happiness, but also warns to "knock on wood", highlighting the idea that happiness can be ephemeral and uncertain.
The song has a universal and relatable message that resonates with many listeners. It is a cautionary tale of sorts - reminding us to be careful what we pursue in life and that happiness is not always guaranteed, no matter how we try to find it. Additionally, the song suggests the importance of understanding and accepting that there may be several different ways for each individual to find their own path to happiness.
The lyrics are accompanied by the classic alternative rock style of the Hoodoo Gurus, with persistent guitar riffs and a steady drum beat that make the song easily recognizable and memorable. The chorus is particularly catchy, with the repetition of "hope it makes you happy" and "knock on wood" that will have people humming along.
