The original lineup was notable for having three guitars and no bass player, creating a distinctive, layered sound. Kimble Rendall left in 1982 before the release of their first single, Leilani, and went on to become a noted music video director. He was effectively replaced by bassist Clyde Bramley. Radalj was not happy with Rendall's departure or Faulkner's increasing influence, and left the band himself, to be replaced by one-time Fun Things guitarist Brad Shepherd. This line-up released the band's break-through first album, Stoneage Romeos, in 1984.
In 1998, the band officially split but reformed for occasional concerts in subsequent years. A full-fledged reunion came in 2004, when they released Mach Schau and began touring again. The band received another boost when Come Anytime (from 1989's Magnum Cum Louder) was used as the theme song to the Australian TV show Thank God You're Here.

Hoodoo Guru's song "Little Drummer Boy" is a rendition of the traditional Christmas song about the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus. The song highlights the story of the poor boy, who upon hearing of the birth of the "Newborn King", decides to pay his respects by playing his drum. The boy understands that while he might not have the wealth to bring fine gifts like the other magi, he can still honor the newborn king with his talent.
The lyrics carry a message of humility, sacrifice, and the importance of giving back to society even when we might not have much to give. The little drummer boy, despite being poor, still finds a way to make a valuable contribution through his music. The song celebrates the idea that no matter how small or insignificant we might think our contribution is, it can still be highly valued.
The references to Mary nodding and the Ox and Lamb keeping time create a vivid image of a cold winter's night in Bethlehem, with the animals gathering around the manger as the boy plays his drum for the baby Jesus. The final lines of the song, "Then He smiled at me, me and my drum" suggest that the boy's music was appreciated by the infant Jesus, and further reinforces the underlying message of the song of how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
