The original lineup was notable for having three guitars and no bass player, creating a distinctive, layered sound. Kimble Rendall left in 1982 before the release of their first single, Leilani, and went on to become a noted music video director. He was effectively replaced by bassist Clyde Bramley. Radalj was not happy with Rendall's departure or Faulkner's increasing influence, and left the band himself, to be replaced by one-time Fun Things guitarist Brad Shepherd. This line-up released the band's break-through first album, Stoneage Romeos, in 1984.
In 1998, the band officially split but reformed for occasional concerts in subsequent years. A full-fledged reunion came in 2004, when they released Mach Schau and began touring again. The band received another boost when Come Anytime (from 1989's Magnum Cum Louder) was used as the theme song to the Australian TV show Thank God You're Here.

The Hoodoo Gurus’ “Night Must Fall” deals with the pain of losing someone close, the fear of being left alone, and the inevitability of time running out. The lyrics express the singer’s regret at having lost someone important, and the pain that it has brought to him. He laments that he never thought that their relationship would end, and he cannot bear the thought of losing any more friends. The lyric, “Not to have you close at hand, wasn´t quite what I had planned” implies that he had expected this person to always be there for him, but now he is left alone, and he can’t catch his breath. He is in panic mode because he realizes that he no longer has their support.
The singer then discusses the inevitability of time running out. The lyric, “A moment that will pass, we knew it couldn´t last” implies that they both knew that their time together was limited but decided to ignore this fact. He is now realizing that he is older, and they are not as close as they used to be. He says, “you’re in your prime now, darling, and that’s the worst of all” as he recognizes that his friend is thriving while he is not.
