You & I
Hooker Lyrics

To do the thing I used to do for you
Just call my name, I'm not ashamed
I'll come running back to you
Can't sleep at night, I can't eat a bite
When you were mine I didn't treat your right
Just call my name, I know, I know I'm not ashamed
Just like a king, I've lost everything
I sit all alone on my throne
I've got my pride but deep down inside
I'm yours and yours alone, whoa oh
I try to forget, have no regrets
This love of ours could always start anew
Just call my name, whoa, I know I'm not ashamed
I'll come running back to you
Just like a king, I've lost everything
I sit all alone on my throne
I've got my pride but deep down inside
I'm yours and yours alone, whoa oh
I try to forget, have no regrets
This love of ours could always start anew
Just call my name, I know, I know, I know I'm not ashamed
I'll come running back to you
The lyrics to Hooker's song "You & I" express the pain and desperation of a person who has lost their loved one and is now pleading them to come back. The singer's longing and love for their partner are clear in the opening lines, "Oh come back baby, Oh mama please don't go." The singer is so deeply in love that they feel their partner could never know the extent of their love. The chorus, "Come back baby, yeah yeah, let's talk it over one more time," emphasizes the singer's desire to reconcile and work things out with their significant other.
The second verse, "Well, I admit, baby, that I was wrong. Don't you know, baby, child you've been gone too long," reveals that the singer is aware of the mistake they made, which led to the separation. The lyrics express a willingness to acknowledge and correct their faults to save the relationship. The lines, "I said if I could holler, like a mountain jack, I'd go up on the mountain, people, I'd call my baby back," portray the singer's desperation and shows that they will go to great lengths to have their partner back.
The final verse, "Now one of these days, baby, and it won't be long, yeah. You're gonna look for me, child, you know, and I'll be gone," is a warning of consequences if the partner does not return. The lyrics suggest that time is running out and there may come a point where the singer may not be available even if their partner decides to return.
Overall, the song's lyrics are an appeal for reconciliation, and the singer's love and longing for their partner are prominent throughout the song.
