Jackie Cane
Hooverphonic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jackie cane was everybody's sugar
She gave it all wherever it took her
They used her up before the sell-by date
To be so sweet was her only mistake
The only flower in a concrete garden
Destined to be the rock that wouldn't harden
Jackie cane was everybody's sugar
She'd melt away if only she could of
Taken for granted
Abused and drained
They ran her dry and
Then it never rained
She was the queen
Of the 25th hour
They looked so sweet

But the after-taste was sour
Salty days for Jackie Cane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hooverphonic's song "Jackie Cane" tells a tale of a woman who was used up and exploited by everyone, causing her demise. She was everybody's sugar, giving her all to everyone who took her in. However, they used her up before her time and sold her off when she was no longer of use to them. Her only mistake was being too sweet.

Despite being the only flower in a concrete garden, Jackie Cane was destined to become the rock that wouldn't harden. Her selflessness cost her everything in the end, as she was ultimately taken for granted, abused, and drained. They ran her dry and left her to fend for herself; the after-taste of her life was sour, despite the sweetness she offered to everyone around her. Jackie Cane was the queen of the 25th hour - always there for those in need but never having enough time or energy for herself. The lyrics conclude by mentioning "salty days for Jackie Cane," implying that she became bitter in the end.

@Hugh.G.Dildeaux

Omg.. you are so right!!! Quentin, Robert Rodriguez.. and this song is very easy on the guitar. I played it on a Gibson les Paul with a lot of distortion 😃👍♥️

I I really like this Belgian band. The music they write is very beautiful and excellent for listening and relaxing. The Magnificent Tree album is a timeless masterpiece. Congratulations! In fact, all of their albums are masterpieces of alternative pop music. I call it "alternative pop music" for the simple reason that Hooverphonic music isn't just limited to Trip Hop, Dream Pop or Indie. Their excellent music is beyond any alternative pop music genre. It's just my opinion. If I'm wrong, I appreciate that someone corrects me, if you please.

@BrayanJCruz
