Jackie cane
Hooverphonics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jackie cane was everybody's sugar
She gave it all wherever it took her
They used her up before the sell-by date
To be so sweet was her only mistake
The only flower in a concrete garden
Destined to be the rock that wouldn't harden
Jackie cane was everybody's sugar
She'd melt away if only she could of
Taken for granted
Abused and drained
They ran her dry and
Then it never rained
She was the queen
Of the 25th hour
They looked so sweet

But the after-taste was sour
Salty days for Jackie Cane

Overall Meaning

Hooverphonic's song "Jackie Cane" is a soulful and melancholic ballad that explores the life of a woman named Jackie Cane. The opening lines refer to Jackie's ubiquitous presence, her sweetness, and her eagerness to please others. She always gave her all, even if it meant getting used up before her sell-by date. The song suggests that her only mistake was to be too sweet, too giving, and too trusting.

The second verse describes Jackie's fate as the only flower in a concrete garden. She was destined to be the hard rock that wouldn't harden, which implies that she was resilient but vulnerable. Despite her inner strength and beauty, Jackie was taken for granted, abused, and drained by those around her. The song metaphorically compares her to a queen of the 25th hour, implying that she was always there when others needed her, even when it was too late. However, as the final lines suggest, this loyalty came at a great cost: the aftertaste of her sweetness was sour, and her final days were filled with saltiness.

Overall, "Jackie Cane" is a powerful and poignant commentary on the human condition. It highlights the dangers of giving too much of oneself to others, of being too sweet and too accommodating. It also exposes the harsh reality of being used up and discarded by others, despite one's best efforts to be of service.

I I really like this Belgian band. The music they write is very beautiful and excellent for listening and relaxing. The Magnificent Tree album is a timeless masterpiece. Congratulations! In fact, all of their albums are masterpieces of alternative pop music. I call it "alternative pop music" for the simple reason that Hooverphonic music isn't just limited to Trip Hop, Dream Pop or Indie. Their excellent music is beyond any alternative pop music genre. It's just my opinion. If I'm wrong, I appreciate that someone corrects me, if you please.

@BrayanJCruz
