Eden
Hope Tala Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come to the river
Don't take a bite if it tastes too bitter
Don't make the same mistake as Eve please
Don't let them tell you to get down on your knees

Nobody's worth your tears
You know I've cried for you for years
And every time your face appears in my dreams
It's never as it seems, and we go

Round and round, round and round
Round and round, round and round
Round and round

Round and round, round and round
Round and round, round and round
Round and round

You want me to sing you a song of sixpence
Write you another rhyme
I would open my bones for you
But I just don't have the time

So the stories in my veins will have to do
Take shelter when it rains and we'll get through
I would spend my soul for you

Round and round, round and round
Round and round, round and round
Round and round
Round

Round and round, round and round
Round and round, round and round
Round and round

Come to the river
Don't take a bite if it tastes too bitter
Don't make the same mistake as Eve
Don't let them tell you to get down on your knees

Nobody's worth your tears
You know I've cried for you for years
And every time your face appears in my dreams
It's never as it seems (never as it seems)

You know we've been fighting and it's getting so late
Why're you walking so fast, it's dark, baby wait
I thought when we met it had happened like fate
But as the months went by I guess it all turned to hate
And it's like, "I'm Adam, she's Eve
And I guess I still love her so I'm gonna have to leave"
But it's not about you, and it's not about me
I guess it's all about Eve

Being in love is like being in the Garden of Eden

And you get chucked out when the person realises they don't love you
Like they said they did

Overall Meaning

Hope Tala's song "Eden" is a poignant reflection on the perils of love and relationships. In the opening lines, she invites the listener to come to the river, but reminds them not to make the same mistake as Eve from the Bible did by biting the forbidden apple. She warns against letting anyone put them down and tells the listener that nobody is worth their tears. She then goes on to talk about her own experience of crying for someone for years, but realizing that every time she dreamt about them, it was never as it seemed.

The chorus of the song, "round and round," seems to represent the circular nature of relationships and how easy it is to get trapped in the same patterns of hurt and disappointment. She then goes on to use the metaphor of singing a song of sixpence and opening her bones to demonstrate her commitment to the person she loves, but ultimately admits that she doesn't have the time to give them what they need.
