But while Waits' early life was tumultuous to say the least, that voice managed to prevail, and on her self-titled debut for the Radarproof label, we are shown why we are all the better for it. Just as capable of singing a torch song as getting down and dirty with the blues, Waits tackles a combination of covers and originals on her CD with passion that really should be displayed more in the music business.
Her choices for covers are as curious when one sees them listed on the CD cover as they are ultimately appropriate, once they have been heard. Tom Waits' "Get Behind the Mule," sizzles with mischief when the female Waits works her magic on it. Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells," a criminally overlooked track from his excellent "Oh Mercy" CD, is given beautifully reverent treatment by Waits, as is the Billie Holiday standard, "Yesterdays."
Just wait until you hear the longing in Waits' voice when she tackles Ray Charles' "Drown in My Own Tears." Among the originals, the song "The Ballad of Judith Anne" is the most intriguing.
Also good is "Ignatius," which closes out the CD.

Days I knew as happy sweet
Sequestered days, olden days, golden days
Days of mad romance and love
Then gay youth was mine
Truth was mine
Joyous free in flame and life
Then sooth was mine
Sad am I, glad am I
For today I'm dreamin' of yesterdays
Yesterdays, yesterdays
Days I knew as happy sweet
Sequestered days, olden days, golden days
Days of mad romance and love
For then gay youth was mine
Truth was mine
Joyous free in flame and life
Then sooth was mine
Sad am I, glad am I
For today I'm dreamin' of yesterdays
The song "Yesterdays" by Hope Waits expresses a deep longing for the past and the happy memories that were once experienced. The lyrics compare the present to the past, describing the days of "mad romance and love" as "sequestered" and "golden". The nostalgic tone of the song is established throughout its entirety, with repetitive descriptions of the past as "happy" and "sweet". The singer reminisces about youth, truth, joy and freedom that was once theirs, and dreams of those days again.
The opening line, "Yesterdays, yesterdays," acts as a refrain which sets the nostalgic mood of the entire song right from the start, and remains as a constant reminder of the past as the lyrics describe what was once experienced. The song describes a sense of longing, as the singer wishes they could relive those days of youth and love. The use of opposites in the lyrics, such as "sad am I, glad am I", creates a bittersweet effect, portraying the mixed emotions that come with reminiscing on the past. This contrast is further highlighted by the line "sad am I, glad am I, for today I'm dreamin' of yesterdays".
Overall, "Yesterdays" is a song that speaks to anyone who has ever longed for a time gone by, where memories are kept alive and cherished, and where the longing for the past never truly fades away.
