Ain't No Sunshine
Horace Andy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she always gone too long
Anytime she goes away

Wondering this time where she's gone
Wondering if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
Hey, I'm gonna leave your fields alone

But ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness everyday
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away

Anytime she goes away, yeah, yeah, yeah
Anytime she goes away

Overall Meaning

In Horace Andy's song 'Ain't No Sunshine', the artist expresses a feeling of emptiness and sorrow when his lover is not around, and how her absence causes the darkness to prevail in his life. The lines "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, It's not warm when she's away" emphasize how her love is like a warm sunshine, and he feels cold and lonely in her absence. The repetition of "I know" in the verses conveys his self-awareness and acceptance of his situation, that he understands his lover will leave, but he cannot help but feel the pain of her departure.

In the second verse, Andy expresses his concern about whether she will come back or not, and the resulting uncertainty causes him more anxiety. The lines "And this house just ain't no home, Anytime she goes away" show how her presence fills his life with joy and comfort, and without her, his home feels like an empty place. The last verse suggests that Andy wants to leave his lover alone to live her life as she pleases, even though it causes him pain. The repetition of "Anytime she goes away" at the end signifies the inevitability of her leaving, and the impact it has on his life.

Divine.DIVINE !! Horace Andy is Fundamentally Dread. It doesn't get more stripped down than that !! spooky scary though~ haunting~moving~mind-blowing~ancient~deja vue~The most lovely thing about his version is it carries the warm fusion of the happy care-free air of the 1960s and 70s when we were less afraid to feel deeply about everything {before Thatcher and the swamp that followed into e.u.}
