As I packed my bags to leave
Thought she would start to cry
Sit around my room all week
But the girl, she fooled me this time
She acted like I was the last thing on her mind
And I would like to start all over again
As I took these steps
Towards the open door
Knowing all the time
Lord, I didn't want to go
She didn't give me no sign
Nothing that would make me change my mind
And I would like to start all over again
Baby, can I change my mind?
Oh, I played my game
Many, many times before
But people, let me tell you all
Oh, I never reached the door
The wind is high out tonight
I keep lookin' but my baby baby's not in sight
And I would like to start all over again
Baby, baby, can I, can I change, change my mind?
I'd be playin' my game
The lyrics to Horace Andy's song "Can I Change My Mind" tell the story of a man who is leaving his lover, convinced that she will try to stop him and maybe even cry. However, when he is about to leave, she surprises him by acting like he is the last thing on her mind, not giving him any sign that she wants him to stay. The man regrets his decision to leave and wishes he could start over again with the woman he loves, asking her if he can change his mind.
The song can be interpreted in different ways but one possible reading is that it reflects the fear of rejection and the desire for emotional security that many people experience in relationships. The man in the song is afraid of being rejected by the woman he loves, so he decides to leave before she can hurt him. However, when he sees that she doesn't seem to care, he realizes that maybe he misjudged her feelings and that he still loves her. He wants to undo his decision and start over again, hoping that he can win back her heart.
The lyrics are supported by a soulful reggae melody that captures the emotional turmoil of the singer. The song is a classic example of the sweet falsetto style that Horace Andy is known for, and it showcases his ability to convey deep emotions through his voice. "Can I Change My Mind" is a timeless love song that speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever experienced the ups and downs of a romantic relationship.
