I was rejected from jazz band. I was heartbroken..I loved jazz and I wanted to play so badly, but I felt like I couldn't, I didn't know where to start. But then he found me, and I did too. There was this small jazz group, lead by (in my opinion) the best saxophone player in the state. I was nervous at first. Refused to solo. But then he gave me this song. And from his words, and his encouragement, I played. My first solo on the trumpet. I love this song, it just reminds me of the moment that started it all. Sadly, the leaders of the group are graduating. But that only means that my friends and I take on that responsibility. That means we make the same change they did. That means no matter what, anyone will play jazz, as long as they felt the same longing and desire as many have.

Try listening to Berrys "You Can't Catch Me" and the Beatles "Come Together". Same song. Berry's is faster. The Beatles slowed it down. Ronald Simmons Very underated.Truthfully, I think even Silver as a composer doesnt get enough acclaim, and that can be due to that split after be-bop where you have people like Blakey and Silver continuing the so called "hard bop" and then the more sophisticated mixing of like classical stuff and Jazz with Miles Quintet in the late 50s early 60s.

In any case, Coltrane and Rollins easily overshadow a lot of tenor greats because of their record label successes and whatnot, but Henderson was right up there with them. Hawkins also is in that convo.

I'm going through the "fake" book finding some jazz classics to listen to. What rich harmonies, creativity and energy I'm discovering. I hope that some younger people will take the time to listen to this incredible music to expand their musical ears. When a jazz aficionado tells someone they have to try to Enjoy the notes that aren’t there it is a hint to how complicated it is to enjoy…jazz is a rare music you grow by listening to…because it requires multiple perceptions based on the fact that you can’t enjoy every facet of the great songs at once and a great song can be listened to many times without hearing the whole thing unless you listen to it from multiple sides within yourself…it is personal growth in musical form…

In the midst of the jazz wizardry and humanly untouchable fast notes of Coltrane and the virtuosity of the hydra like hands of Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver emerged as the funky antithesis. In fact, with his solo in the monumental "Song for my Father", he hails as the less is more champion.

Starting from 1:40 he builds a beautiful, thoughtful homage to the blues employing recurring motifs a la Wagner carried by notes each of them holding their own weight and identity. My exact thought when I first listened to it was: the courage it takes to go against the grain and present yourself as not only worthy but great.

His music was never so verbose or necessarily intricate as in to force admiration or inflict a scholarly lesson upon his listeners.

You won't be miss... you're encrusted in music's DNA.

when I was a teenager, my greek uncle, who I considere a second father, show me the title song, and I was like "how can a man listen this type of music?". One year later I was totally addicted, playing it on repeat. Now everytime I hear this song I remember our moments talking about the moon and the sun, while horace silver was playing. He's still alive, but in another country, and this song makes us more closer.

One of the first albums I purchased when I was 17, and the British Invasion was all over the airways. I simply connected with Horace’s sound and technique, and before long I was listening to him, and Herbie Mann, and Monk. None of my classmates understood, and shrugged their shoulders, but I just said “So What” (props to Miles). The Steely Dan leaders acknowledged the intro borrowed for “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number,” and to this day, at age 73, whenever I hear the opening of that tune, I can’t help but reminisce the days of my youth and discovering jazz. RIP Horace Silver.
