The lyrics of Hoshi's song "Pleurs de fumoir" depict a sense of shared struggle and escapism through smoking and drinking. The first verse talks about how the singer's heart and lungs, which represent his emotions and well-being, are in a similar state. The mention of the smell of cigarettes ingrained in their jackets signifies their constant involvement in this self-destructive habit. The singer finds solace in smoking the rumors, suggesting that he uses smoking as a means to drown out the noise and gossip around him. He has been waiting for someone to have a meaningful conversation with, perhaps seeking comfort and connection in the midst of the smoke-filled environment they are in.
The chorus reflects the idea of using alcohol to overcome the fear of the night and sharing their stories while leaning on the bar counter. It suggests a sense of camaraderie and support between individuals who use alcohol and cigarettes as an escape. They decide to put an end to fights and even go as far as buying the entire bar, showcasing their collective desire for peace and unity. However, despite their efforts, they ultimately end up on the street, symbolizing the temporary nature of their escape and the underlying sadness they feel.
The second verse introduces the singer getting lost in the forest of bourbon, a metaphorical representation of a state of intoxication. He has lost not only his heart but also his identity, as represented by his tail, his soul, and his lungs. Despite drowning his fears with alcohol, he notices someone watching him in a charming way. The desire for an extreme form of comfort and healing is expressed through the request for the most intense treatment if he dies that night.
The final verse presents a brief exchange between a man and a woman, where the woman asks for a light, only to be told that smoking is bad. This interaction illustrates the societal judgment and disapproval of smoking, contrasting with the moments of escape and connection the singer experiences within the world of smoke and alcohol.
